Why is Cisco hiring H1Bs when they are layong off by the thousands in the US, does that make sense to you?

---> When they plan to cut, they just don't care a sh-- but just cut whatever the % ... it doesn't matter whether its h1 or not. Last major cut there were a lot of people in H1B too.

Cisco has to pay as per the Department of Labor LCA norms which is high (am talking about Bay Area/Austin/NC) so its always better to hire some one without H1B. Also they have to spend a lot of money for Lawyers fee, H1 fee, GC application etc etc. So the main reason is not enough STEM people available to fill the position. Lot of them are only on the engineering side, we can hardly see any on the sales, HR areas. Contractors I agree they don't make much money as their employers eat a big share. Cisco give a lot of short term work to contracting.

Who can fix this? The congress has to act. They should impose a rule if any company want to hire H1B then they have to pay at least 2 times that of the annual house hold income for that state. If they impose strict restriction then companies who can afford to pay and only if required will hire H1. If everyone is telling cheap paid h1b is the problem why not fixing it instead of blaming it all the time. Fix it.

What if they restrict no H1 at all ? I will say a lot of job get outsourced to India/China and also countries like Canada will make advantage of it. Without H1 the tech industry can't survive thats a universal fact.

In 2016 Cisco system got 1529 H1 application approved. In 2015 they got 1001 applications. Cisco has approx 77k employees world wide and approx 45k in US so less than 10% in H1B mainly on the engineering side. What I heard is Cisco has to pay min LCA salary set by Department of Labor for all H1B employees (approx 137k base sal for a eng 10, approx 125k base sal for eng 8) What abuse are you talking about ?
