Macy's is in the midst of an identity crisis

Layoffs happen, yes. But sometimes the way they are seemingly decided and then implemented gives the appearance that the upper tier doesn't really have a plan beyond what happened in the last quarter. They need to save "x" amount of dollars, and this will do it, so let's lay off these people in this business. Boom. It is done. Not only does a layoff of even one person within one store begin a ripple effect that affects not only the laid off worker, but it also demoralizes the entire team and leaves them fearing for their own positions. Fear leads to non-magical interactions on the selling floor. Non-magical interactions on the selling floor lead to unhappy customers. Unhappy customers lead to low magic scores and poor sales numbers. And, we all know where that eventually leads.

Macy's is in the midst of an identity crisis and it's scrambling to find itself before it becomes completely irrelevant. The new leadership is not promising - and I don't just mean Jeff Gennette. All of the upper tier seem to be so far removed from the basic operation of a store - what it takes on the daily to make numbers and keep employees happy and showing up, and keep customers coming in and shopping - that they don't have a clue how to fix processes (or at least not make them worse), streamline and cut the fat while keeping the heart of Macy's (it's shopping experience and knowledgeable retail staff) intact.

Final thought: Researching the millennial in an effort to capture the cohort and turn him/her into a lifelong Macy's customer is a smart business move - it is essential to turning things around for dear old Macy's. However, if the top tier of old white men who run Macy's inherently lack the capacity to understand and embrace that demographic (hence the need to deep dive research in the first place), utilize and apply that data to make the kind of business decisions that will make the strategy a success, then they just as soon throw money off the top of Herald Square. All the layoffs in the world won't bridge the generation gap no matter how much they try.

These are not invalid complaints....You must be at the top of the food chain and are out of touch with what is happening in the stores ,or your sitting in your office at a store causing the issues. Don't forget we had hard dedicated working employees that were layoff because of greed to cut salaries. Maybe they should of cut your job...Just whining on this freedom FORUM!!!

In reading these comments, my question falls in line with the person that asked why do you continue to work for a company that treats you so poorly? I hardly think a company as big as Macy's would find it behooves them to mistreat associates. My advice to those of you that find it necessary to flood forums with invalid complaints , use the time to fill out job applications else where.

The problem I'd not The "old white men"as you put it , running the company..... They have made it the iconic retailer that Macy's is. The issue is finding employees that support their company. If you can't support the company you work for that pays your wage every week and treats you pretty darn good , then QUIT and let someone who is enthusiastic take your place. You whining complaining people hit the road!

This is sad. An American icon store has reached the end of the rope and is barely hanging on by a thread. It's only a matter of time when this giant retailer finally falls. Desperation has cause them to do desperate measures which includes unethical measures.

I am afraid so - The entire brand is tired and rested on its laurels as an American icon of retail for WAAAAAAY too long before pulling the trigger. The stores (even the Platinum doors) look dated and sparse. Visual can only do so much with corporate directives and left over this and that from their cubby holes. Last Act is a horrendous mess ALL.THE.TIME - Goodwill is cleaner and more organized. Areas of pride don't reflect pride - dirty, dusty, messy, spills, litter. Dressing rooms are creepy and need some polish. Furniture is raggedy. Cash wraps are a hot mess. No attention to detail. The buyers are way off on what people in certain geographic locations want, could not care less about demographics per store, and it shows. (My absolute favorite is the stock that never sees the floor because someone squirrels it away or mismanages it until it becomes penny stock. LOLOLOL.) Bathrooms are generally filthy unless an associate or someone from the Executive Office cleans them because they've cut the hours of the outside cleaning vendor. The overhead music is IRRITATING AF. People want to shop in a nicely appointed place, with at least the appearance of opulence, and most Macy's don't reach that pinnacle. Now Dillard's knows how to make a visual impact - it's warm, inviting, well-planned and well-stocked.
