What is IBM's cloud? Softlayer? They are in the same boat as Oracle. All smoke and mirrors. Dell/EMC and Lenovo are the only infrastructure technology companies that aren't claiming to be a cloud company. Not that things there are any better but they are still trying to maximize on-prem revenue.

Article summary - if you are a tech company that is getting pulled in the hottest market by an online retailer, just change the definition of the word "Cloud" so that you can claim dominance. The quote that IBM is a bigger "Cloud" company than Amazon is priceless. Not to mention how their new mainframes are an example of a successful Cloud approach.

Oracle is simply copying the IBM playbook. Sell on-premise hardware, call it Cloud, show Wall Street that Cloud revenue is "growing", watch the stock price go up and have the top executives cash out on their options. Meanwhile, promote the promise of a younger workforce (even one that doesn't need a college degree according to IBM) while letting experienced people (i.e. more expensive) go in order to try and maintain margins.

The strategy works, it is just a question of how long. Both IBM and Oracle are enormous enterprises with a ton of cash and still a good amount of cash flow. They could stay afloat and generate big paychecks for top executives for years.
