Online Sales Blamed for Retail Collapse

Here's some facts the media will never tell you, because they want you to think the collapse of retail has nothing to do with the economy.

Online sales make up about 9% of total retail sales.

Amazon is only a fraction of that 9%.

These numbers have not changed dramatically, they have been growing, but not dramatically, thus have been fairly constant for years.

Retail's collapse has little to do with online or Amazon, and much to do with a faltering economy and massive overbuilding of stores.

You cannot believe what you are told by the mainstream media or government stats. They lie as a habit, it is what usually comes from their mouths, not an occasional fib.

@1tug - Been there and done that! My recreational shopping came to a complete halt nine years ago. With most of my contemporaries feeling the same way, even gift shopping has changed. Taking each other out for a great dinner is now the gift of choice. The only resulting clutter is a doggy bag, but it disappears the very next day.

You know what has affected baby boomers' buying habits, but doesn't get talked about nearly enough? We've all experienced cleaning out our parents' stuff after they downsize or die. Lots of my contemporaries have gone through that and swear off buying more useless crap. Recreational shopping is suffering. And that is death to mall retail

its 8-12 percent but yeah, you're right. I think retail expected their trends up upward sales to continue as they had been for years but it didn't happen. A lot of stores probably overcommitted to that idea and built stores based on projected figures.
