Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Customers are not helping the morale

Though I've had to tell people now and then all this year that no, so far our store is okay... Gets old. I'm sure they mean no harm, but they don't seem to consider that the understaffed and overworked employees don't need them putting additional worry about our jobs into our heads at work. As it is, that woman on the phone had me worrying for months. Ugh.

Same here, @PMTF0tS-4crl. Another Sears relatively close to us recently closed, and since then we have been inundated by customers asking not if, but when we are closing. It's like a foregone conclusion, and to say it's its discerning is an understatement. It's enough that I have to convince myself I'll have a job next month, now I have to convince customers as well?

Believe what you want but invest the time and look for another job. It's best to work on a back up plan. Also Eddie planned on closing stores regardless. I work with someone who was in that dept at Hoffman. They had store closings planned for the next 5 years. They are just accelerating.

I agree with you. Unfortunately we are in a culture of drama today where I honestly feel like some people "celebrate" others tough times. I wasn't raised to say to someone something like "how long will you have a job" or "poor you" or whatever. It is just in poor taste. So hold your head up high as truthfully that person who is saying something to you could be out of a job just as easily as the rest of us.

The response to anyone who asks snarky about when the store is closing for good and responding with we close at 9pm today and reopen at 10am is gold. It’s unfortunate that customers have to sarcastic and rude when it comes to struggling companies, but that’s the nature of retail regardless if you’re in a company that’s doing well or not.

If I had a dollar for everytime someone has asked me "When are you closing? When are your liquidation sales going to start?" I wouldn't need to work at Kmart as my second job.

Nothing is wrong. We are just transforming. Drink this kool-aid and it will be ok.

@bum slammer @ddw I think we work at the same store. I'm want to ask. I wonder if the manager really believes that or if he's trying to make us believe it? Either he's stupid or he thinks we're stupid. Although he has the pretend to look busy & important but be lazy as can be down pat so maybe he isn't totally dumb. Just drinking the diet coke he stole from the employee refrigerator and sitting at his desk.

Our customer base is horrible. Couple with the 45 year old pedo who works in automotive always hitting on teen girls who come in to use the restroom, I want to hang myself from a SYWR sign.

@nox - The answer to your situation has been provided on this board many times. "When they have this smartass attitude with a smirky smile asking me, So I heard you guys are closing," simply reply, "Yes, at 9:00, and we will reopen at 10:00 tomorrow morning."

The bottom line , each and everyone should already be looking for a new job. The billion dollar man will not continue to dump his riches into a dying company that vendors are already jumping ship. Whirlpool is announcing the news with sears tonight, watch the stock hit rock bottom in the morning, im calling this and im not this popcorn guy ... lol ... im an ASM at sears

@ddw Makes me wonder if we work in the same store. The managers are so delusional that we are perfectly fine and think Eddie is the greatest and that Sears will overcome this.

Anyhow my problem with customers is not when they are asking if were closing, its when they have this smartass attitude with a smirky smile asking me "so I heard you guys are closing" or in anyway related basically being d---s about it. I don't mind when I am just asked, but when they try to rub it gets kind of annoying, Funny they make it seem like it would be the end of the world if the company closes than it closes life goes on.

While I understand where you're coming from, I think you'd be better off just putting that energy toward finding some other job. Staying until the end isn't a wise decision for most people, even though it's the easiest decision.

Did you mean discerning or disconcerting? You really are distraught.

@PTMg4so-ddw "Most of our customers are either old bitter retirees or illegal hispanics. Throw in the meth head white trash and gibs me dat urbanites and our store is a disaster of morale."

Sounds a lot like my Kmart, sadly...

Most of our customers are either old bitter retirees or illegal hispanics. Throw in the meth head white trash and gibs me dat urbanites and our store is a disaster of morale.

Plus we have a manager who is probably the biggest brainwashed Sears cheerleader on Earth. he literally spun Eddie's loan to us as a good things saying: "See how much confidence he has in us to lend us his own money?"

Companies are responsible for employee morale. If you aren't blaming them, you are part of the problem.
