Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Incoming exodus of talent

Anecdotally, I am hearing in the hallways and private conversations an enormous exodus of talent brewing after the RSU and bonuses are paid off next month or so.

It will be the motherhood of all attritions. They will not have to do any layoffs with or without NXP deal closing.

Unfortunately, the ones we need are precisely the ones on their way out to greener pastures.

The management just shrugs in arrogance and contempt. What a shame!

Can't speak on as large a scale, @PTJGgHH-nkn, but I know of two people who are essential to us who have basically already packed. I can see this being a huge issue for us if it really happens all across the board as you state.

Worst part: One of my friends is manager at Intel in SD, and he said they are preparing for layoffs before the end of the year too. I always thought that was my safety net when I get fired from QCOM. So much for that.

This is totally happening. I am seeing many decent young engineers are leaving. The management level is full of incompetent people who want to s--- as much juice as possible out of the team/organization with no intention to make any valuable contribution.

Surprisingly, Qcom still has good name in the tech community. College talent should still come in.

Most of you will lose your jobs in your 40s. And you will find nowhere to go in San Diego. This is scary but true. You will see it happen in several years. Polish your skill set and resume. Be prepared to move once you have opportunities.

Attrition is huge is a fact, the reality is that only people who cannot find a better job are staying.....

Attrition is not 80% don’t be ridiculous. The fact is there needs to be a certain ratio of employees in high expense countries and cheap labor countries. I have heard the ratio is 1:3. This makes sense if you look at competitors ratios. This is only the business is not personal.

I would hate to be one of the last on a sinking ship. There will be no lifeboats left if I wait too long. Greener pastures, here I come.

I got straight 6 and 7s on all my reviews here even first period after I joined. I consider myself one of the essential engineers in my team. But I am fed up with incompetent management screwing up all the good engineering work. Why can't they fire most of the managers and VPs and SVPs and build it up again. I am fed up and done. Goodbye Q

Austin sounds like a lot of fun. Lots of work with Samsung and apple and others in the area.

Leave the ship before there are no more jobs left out there.

I spent most of my life since college in San Diego. I’m ready to go elsewhere if needed. I think I’d like to try Austin Texas for a while. There seems to be a lot happening in tech there. Has anyone else considered Austin Texas or have experience working and living there?

The problem is that there no viable alternatives in SD. Anyone I know who is not bound to San Diego is basically ready to leave, looking to move to Silicon Valley. I am one of those poor s---ers who still have a house to pay off, and I was hoping to ride the QCOM train for at least another decade.

A manager from another team alluded to the fact that my manager might have placed me in stage 2 or 3, so I am screwed pretty badly unless quite a few people do leave. Sadly, they are indeed some of the best.

Whatever happens there are few few who actually have control over the situation. So go with the flow. Zen all the way...let the universe be the universe.

When all the big raises and promotions are announced in a few weeks, everyone will stay.
