Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike didn't layoff - they fired people to accommodate a culture purge

In my area at Nike over half the workers were contract. If Nike needed to reduce headcount, why not keep the employees and eliminate the contract workforce? It would be nice to know how many Nike employees in the US - both contract and captive - are not US citizens. I suspect the contract workers were kept because 1) they're cheaper and 2) they can be dispensed with easily. Nike is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Wonder what the company thinks about all this now in light of the MP memo?

Here in Europe they did the same thing. All the employees fired were long timers....

H1B is the dirty little secret that's going to get them once the press figures it out.

I was an ETW last year. After I started at Nike I learned my dept had a revolving door of ETW's. Like 35 in a couple years. By the time you learn the Nike way you are out the door. Don't believe them when they say they'll hire you. There has to be headcount. Yeah.... no. Why does Nike keep so many ETW's? Probably cos they don't have to count them as headcount and if they cut them loose ... who cares??? They weren't Nike employees so they don't need to report that to Wall Street. I got out of there as soon as I could.

Thanks @ftv, good advice. I used to look forward to going to work. I am way off campus but this place was alive every morning, a real sense of energy and community. Now I work in a ghost town. There are empty cubes as far as you can see. People walk around like zombies. Everyone has their head down and no one is talking. You can feel the fear and anxiety. I know what survivors guilt feels like. I lost some of my best friends. Some had to leave town to find work. One found work in Australia. She leaves in November and I will probably never see her again. Its like they are dead. My team may be outsourced. I haven't seen my manager in days, she's "working from home". Probably interviewing for other jobs. I am like the rest here and not waiting to get fired. I am leaving on my own terms and the sooner the better.

@nlw,@rtl before you give your notice, clear out your desk of anything personal or private. Same with your laptop. Download anything personal and anything you may need for your resume but no ip, tech is watching. Don't tell anyone your plans. There is no loyalty, everyone is out for themselves. You may get to keep your phone (I did) but tech will leave it a brick. All your contacts, photos will be lost. Get your own phone before you leave with a new number and transfer your contacts, you will need them in the future. Give your notice at the end of the week and at the end of the day. Just before, erase and reset your laptop, phone, whatever and leave on top of your desk. Take whatever is left (handbag, backpack) and go home. Leave nothing behind. They promised to ship my stuff to me and I am still waiting. They demand two weeks notice but will kick you out after a ten minute one sided meeting. Take some time for yourself before starting your next job. Don't worry about what people will say, nike can only verify your previous employment, they are not allowed to provide any other information. They is plenty of good work out there. I sat in the sun for two weeks and lined up a job two weeks after that. You will not only survive, you will thrive. Good luck.

All the real talent are leaving. The work is piling up because no one wants to start a project if they are just going to be fired anyway. No one believes what the managers are telling them because they don't think the managers are being told the truth. All the talk is about money, job interviews and who is the next to leave. My friends are sitting around calculating their severance. My manager sits in her office with the door closed all day. I'm with @nlw, I am out of here as soon as I can. it was good while it lasted but now its over. Time to go.

Good for you - my neighbor just left after three years and he waited to give his notice - a really nice guy he gives his notice then they pile on the work - he said they probably won't replace me - I said probably not - I will not support them - I think what they are doing is horrible -

This definitely was a purge! There was a disproportionate number of older employees fired. I saw first hand how one after another of my older friends and coworkers were escorted out the building. Its so empty here now there is actually an echo. I expect more of the same at the end of this month. All those HR people who get sacked will appreciate the irony of having been part of the process to sack others only a few weeks earlier. Next will be the lawyers who helped sack the HR people. Then the whole process starts again. I was told HR has their list and Legal is already reviewing positions to cut later this year. I'm not waiting. I've interviews lined up and I am out of here as soon as I can.
