Thread regarding Sears layoffs

The expectations for given pay are ridiculous

The expectations of minimum wage employees at Sears Holdings stores are totally ridiculous. This isn't a job just piling stuff on shelves or ringing up sales. Sears/Kmart employees are under the gun to make sales and credit quotas, warranty sales, and all sorts of other "metrics" to stay employed. And this is for minimum wage, few hours, few benefits, little possibility of promotion or pay raises. I don't know how the company keeps anybody around. I would suspect quite a few employees "adjust" their pay to market rates by taking advantage of the lack of security in the stores.

Sears is shrinking and transforming how it does retail. This means it's going to sell off the bulk of its brick and mortar stores in due time. You have to accept this reality. No, it's not going to spend a dime investing in its front lines as its goal is to get rid or reduce the number of in-store associates. This is the treatment you're receiving. You are not valued. To get to a better place, you have to accept reality as it is, not as you want it to be. I suggest you leave this hopeless situation.

@lvx- yes, the company is struggling. But if the goal (that's a big IF, in my opinion) is to fix the company, then it has to be done on the front lines. What the public sees and who the public deals with is the actual stores and actual store employees. To be clear, I don't object to struggling along with the company if that's what it takes. I'm on board. The thing I have a hard time with is the excessive salaries and bonuses that are still being doled out and accepted by the executives who are at least partially responsible for steering the company off course. If the company is struggling, sacrifices have to be made from the top down. And it's important to make sure associates way down at the bottom see and understand that the top-tier employees are making some sacrifices too. Otherwise what happens is...well, read the forum.

What kind of solution do you recommend? The company is in the red and going bankrupt any day now. Are you asking for a pay raise? If you want respect, respect yourself first and get another job. Better yet, get an education and some valuable skills.

We are the lowest paid place to work in our count, by at least .50 per hour, so anyone who gets hired is either desperate for a job, has been turned down from other places because of past history or are kids who are just looking for a first job. And the store reflects these things

This is why turnover is so high. Sears will not acknowledge that their employees are their most important asset. Our district recruiter said the following: at this point she would take anybody who breathed, they are waiving assessments and are considering waiving background and drug tests. Also some stores are at the point they may have to close because there are not enough employees to keep the store open. The last statement is straight from a DM. Wake up Sears and show your employees some respect.
