GRC Shanghai to fade out end of 2017

Just heard the sad news that the GRC Shanghai will be cut totally end of this year. All scientists will be laid off. It seems the cut is finally coming. What is the situation in other locations at global research?

I thought this was Immelt's vision, to have research in the countries where we do business. If there are truly 3000 resources in china what the hell where they working on? There should have been tons of ideas and patents coming from that region of the world. Oh, wait the Chinese could give a sh-- about intellectual property and what it means to honor a patent. There is a reason, why we do not want them getting their hands key technical information. Let's face it this brilliant idea from GE was yet another idea that they think they can get something for nothing. If, GE is going to get into the IT business you best be prepared to pay some serious coin for these resources not some hack from china that will sell your secrets and intellectual property to anyone they can down the road.

Yeah who needs research. Not like it gave us the light bulb, x-rays, MRI, first tv station. Killing research is the death of a company. It signals intense focus on short term profits and forget about the future

Who needs research anyways? I also highly doubt that the centers will be closed, they will just be populated with employees that are not on the Corporate or Digital payroll. So in the end money is transferred from the left to the right pocket...

That's right, fade out includes Shanghai, Munich and Brazil. Cost of these centers are peanuts compared to GE Corporate total costs. This is a cheap message to stakeholders.

There are ~3000 people in Shanghai CTC. Not sure how many are impacted.

Announced this morning that GE will have only 2 research centers at Niskayuna and Bangalore. All others phased out. Goal was to get Corporate to stop having to fund these Centers and the work...to lighten the books and save $$. Stay classy GE.
