Makes you wonder what will happen to the few Solaris survivors? I expect they will steadily bail out in the coming months.

@PhkQny4-4vxz:

I don't see how 11.4 could ever be delivered.

It won't be. This was just a panic PR move because of backlash from the few remaining customers when the news of the massive layoff became public earlier this month.

Oracle is trying to conceal the truth. That's their business model.

Who in their right mind would bet their IT infrastructure on Solaris and SPARC at this point.

" apart the confirmation that S11.4 is delayed until fall 2018 (if it will ever see the light, that is)."

Given that entire development teams were wiped out, I don't see how 11.4 could ever be delivered.

maybe not pre-recorded, but for sure heavily embarassing.... ES reading the slides, no added value and sometimes even reading badly. MH clearly not prepared, and very nervous. just a couple of rows of people attending live (maybe30 people?). no words about future, apart the confirmation that S11.4 is delayed until fall 2018 (if it will ever see the ligh, that is).

overall a really depressing show.

@2qlq: He actually had some choice in it. Division heads are given a revenue per employee to meet. The size of the layoff isn't so much of the issue - that was inevitable given the way the business was run and lack of effort to make the Sun products a cornerstone of the company. Firing thousands by pre-recorded conference call is pretty cold. Doing on the eve of a long weekend to avoid publicity and timing it to avoid WARN reporting as much as possible, then not even giving everyone WARN. If only people know how many people actually went. It was a substantially higher than reported in WARN.

@1ohm: As if he had any power over the decision. He was told to let go x% of the staff and that was it. Now, if he had any balls, he'd argue for a lower number, but it seems those balls were RIF'ed a long time ago already.

@lqt Eddie is a hopeless. He likes to think he's smart but he's got no business sense or planning abilities. He just fired a load of software people and now wants product features that require the expertise of some groups he just fired. Doh! He only survives because he's LE's friend. He was also the one responsible for the RIF-by-prerecorded-concall. Talk about the social skills of a gate post.

@PhkQny4-qjj much less of a surprise though when you realize that Sun/Oracle's long lasting Hot chips program committee member was thrown out in the Jan RIF.

That's just... weird. Especially since we all know what was just done to The SPARC Platform Team.

Still embarrassing all the papers for Hot Chips were rejected.

Yes, M8 is still getting its release. Just like all the people that worked so hard on it were released.

They should try selling on QVC. Or the Home Shopping Network.

The announcement will be like, "We are happy to announce our last SPARC server from Oracle/Sun. We only have 100 of these puppies. Buy now before they sold out. And if you call within the next 30 minutes. We will send you another one absolutely free."
