Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Voluntary layoffs?

Does anybody know if IBM ever offers voluntary layoffs? At this point in time, I'd jump at the opportunity.

No. I worked with someone and they asked manager to lay him off during next RA to save someone else. He wasn't, his teammate RAd and then he quit 2 weeks later

"Why would they when they can simply put you on PIP and fire you without compensation?"

You're assuming that FLM's are this cruel. As previous poster stated, most Mgr's would rather go through the RA process over the PIP. It's a much easier conversation letting someone go that is fed up with IBM and is ready to make a career change or retire on their own accord.

If you have a good manager, talk to them. Some welcome those who want to be layed off, as it makes their job easier when the next resource action comes around, and is less work for them than a PIP. If you are eligible for retirement, ask about a "transition to retirement program" that seems to come around a couple of times a year. You can work part time for up to a year at a reduced salary but with full benefits before retiring. But you have to have a good manager, some may see you as trying to game the system.
