Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Severance and unemployment?

Does anyone know if taking severance eliminates applying for unemployment? I remember something about a 6 month wait being part of the severance agreement a couple yrs ago.

This was buried in another thread, but I was wondering the same thing so I bumped it here. I have heard some people say yes, some no, and was wondering if anybody actually knew for sure what the answer is.

My job ended at Sam's Club and I need to know if I should sign up for Unemployment or wait to find out if I get a part time severance pay for 9 years.

if the company waits until January to make announcements on jobs being eliminated, does Sams save money on severance packages because the fiscal year ends in January. Not like the Audit Team being eliminated earlier this year and being compensated for the remainder of the year

In Texas the day you sign your release papers you can go straight and file for unemployment.

I was on the Audit team when they let them go. I took the severance package. I was eligible for unemployment but I didn't receive a check until my vacation pay ran out. I had about 4 weeks of vacation and you have to claim 40 hours a week as pay until it's gone. I received all the vacation pay on my last day but for unemployment benefits you have to claim it as pay received each week. Hope this makes sense. This was in Missouri and I was told each state is different.

You can apply fot unemployment in the state of Illinois. They said it was a gift to the associates.

You can apply for unemployment but it won’t start until your wait is over...wait time depends on how many years you have with the company...example, if you have been with the company for 9 years at time of layoff, you will be eligible for unemployment 9 weeks after layoff
