Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

The suggestion box

Evidently, the 'leaders' in my area of tech collaborated in some manner or form to determine how to engage with the rank and file better. The result: a suggestion box.

Seriously! They mounted a physical box labeled suggestions in the break room. But this posed a problem - how do you keep contract workers from making suggestions? Answer: you have to get a special piece of paper from your department administrator! Keep in mind the suggestions are supposed to be anonymous.

It's my understanding that the idea came from an engagement management director.

And they wonder why the have problems...

Suggestion boxes are just a tool to bring employee satisfaction survey numbers up for leaders. It isn't for the worker.

I'm curious why an etw turned fte is on this site. I'm assuming you have reservations now about Nike but would like to hear your input on the current state inside.

Chill out guys - these were their ideas not mine. Don't shoot the messenger. I have no issues with contract employees - I made my living this way for many, many years. Sorry for the poor choice of words.

The bottom line is that 'leadership' views etw's as expendable. But I guess they view fte's the same way!

Reality check - many, if not most, contractors are really just labor arbitrage, where the department isn't allowed to hire, but allowed to spend. So...if we're willing to spend money on someone, why wouldn't we want to hear their opinions as well. They usually want to get converted to FTE status, so it's reasonable to expect they would provide thoughtful insight to make the work environment better.

Got an issue with contractors man? They’re people too and have suggestions just as a FTE does. I was a contractor for a while and now a FTE and some of the contractors have the best suggestions on issues people aren’t paying attention to.
