Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

http://wfpl.org/humana-offer-early-buyouts-employees/

I was mocked and insulted when I said the upcoming layoffs were due to the ACA. We got out of the exchanges because it was too costly. It's too costly because it was built to fail and is now collapsing. It has a trickle down affect even on Medicare consumers and HAH!

About Humana Inc.:

Humana Inc. is a large for-profit American health insurance company based in Louisville, Kentucky.

Key word "for profit." With VBP [value based payment, for you home gamers] costs have to come down to sustain levels of coverage. HAH [Humana @ Home], for example, costs more than its value in a VBP environment. Some cuts due to dropping ACA, others to trim fat, others to fill C level execs pockets, and finally, offering early retirement is common in this scenario, better than a straight cut IMO. Also, Humana will never buy Molina, but may be positioning to be bought by Cigna.

My $.02

I think Humana is looking to acquire a home health agency....like Molina......to expand into home health

Layoffs are company wide to position the company to be or on the auction block. Get out while you can, once 20% are laid off it will be difficult to find a job. Dont believe there are 2,000 jobs available. That's a gross exaggeration!

Nothing wrong with OP sharing a perspective. Also, there are many folks justifiably frustrated with the communication and conditions at Humana this present year and there is plenty of room expressing for both points of view.

Agreed OP, nobody should be shutting you down, or anyone else here who may have a different view. I would bet that the majority who use this site for information are not bothered by different views in all of this - since that is really not why they are on this site (like myself).

I don't mind the off topic discussion, it's not necessarily useful but it's not hurting anyone, and I see no reason to fly off the handle if somebody posts something I don't agree with.

OP, I have found some people to be incredibly rude on here, especially if what you are saying does not fit their narrative. It seems some want to be mad at Humana and blame this all on the evil leaders of the company. When someone tries to point out the factors causing the layoffs they get attacked. Others even start entire threads just to bash those who back up their statements with facts. You are spot on and I'm sure many of us understand the cause and effect the ACA has had and will have on us.

Thanks for posting the article. I see many other outlets are now reporting on it not just Florida and Louisville. I'm sure Humana wants to get in front of the story to protect stock prices which have already begun to slide since this news was released.

Profit and revenue are not the same though.

Of course I read it. Did you read what I wrote? The early retirement packages are due to us getting out of the ACA. What is it that you think I didn't read? What the article didn't say is why we are getting out...It was costing the company too much. Humana will put a rosy spin on this so the public doesn't rush to dump their stock.

Humana also is hiring in some areas: The company told Insider that it had hired or had extended employment offers to about 50 enrollment specialists in Louisville to review and process applications for TRICARE, the health plan for members of the U.S. military, retirees and their dependents. The company won a one-year, $3.8 billion extension of its government contract for about three million members of the TRICARE South Region. The company last year had won a five-year, $40.5 billion contract for the TRICARE East Region, taking that business from rival UnitedHealthcare.

Humana also told Insider that it continued to have about 700 open jobs in Kentucky “that span the organization and require a variety of skills.” Across the country, Humana has about 2,000 job openings.

OP,did you even read what you posted?

Louisville-based Humana says it is offering buyouts to some employees to help cut costs for the upcoming year, as the health insurance giant is withdrawing from providing coverage under the federal Affordable Care Act.

The Courier-Journal reports eligible employees must be at least 55 and have at least five years of service with the company, but their age and number of service years must add up to at least 65.

They could receive up to a year of severance pay.

Humana’s stock has been on the rise since early this year, when the company’s proposed purchase by Aetna was called off, but Humana says it needs to trim its workforce as part of its exit from the ACA.

Humana has not said if layoffs could occur if enough workers don’t take the buyout offer.

The ACA was a gamble for everyone. Humana wants to focus on Medicare, not Medicaid or ACA. If the exchanges were built to fail, if this is bigger than all of us, fine...but the reality is this is what healthcare is and has been for years, and if you're in it, this happens. And, there will be many more changes as social security dwindles down, people live longer, the donut hole increases, community resources dwindle, etc...etc....etc...welcome to the sad state of healthcare...we've heard "do more with less" for years!

My point is, this is bigger than HAH and people are so rude! I have sent out 16 resumes already this week and have 3 interviews lined up. Thanks for the advice!
