Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Bentonville is the new Detroit

Now that the writing is on the wall, and more and more jobs are going offshore to INDIA and being moved to the west coast so they can be closer to our new buddies who only work five hours a day, I suppose we can expect the NWA area (Bentonville, Rogers, etc.) to become the new Detroit.

Yes, soon we'll see home values drop dramatically just like in Detroit. There will be streets and streets of abandoned homes just like in Detroit. There won't be a tax base to support the communities just like in Detroit, Families will flee, just like in Detroit. Unemployment will rise to an alarming level, just like in Detroit. Crime will escalate - murders, robberies, basically the worst parts of the Bible right here in NWA.

Maybe this sounds surreal to you, but, little by little it's starting.

But, hey, it's not personal. It's just business.

I think that over time the Walton family will operate the company more and more like a financial instrument. What I mean by that is that most of the great retailers of history failed because as you got further away from the visionary founder, the company just became increasingly a profit engine. First they stagnated and then they declined because retailing, at its heart, is about the customer.

Honestly, times have changed, they changed a long time ago, well before Sam Walton croaked. I never met people who were at a company for decades until I came to NWA. Walmart HO is very cult-like, people up here have been very gullible and got fooled into believing in Walmart. The only thing someone should "devote" themselves to for decades is their family, not a freaking publicly traded company FFS.

Read about cults where it ended badly for the followers, then compare it to your experience working at HO, the similarities will blow you away.

In the words of Snoop Dogg,"All you s---ers out there, don't get licked. Do the licking,"

Anyone else tend to think that Sam Walton would be rolling over in his grave if you knew what his company that he worked so hard to build has turned into? 30 year associates walking in and being told they don't have a job. "thanks for devoting most your life to the company...there is the door." Just a random thought from a AM

The thing that is scary is that as Walmart dies, the vendors will all leave. Vendors won't keep offices here when the business declines. They will just have reps fly in.

Suppliers are already laying off.

If you have the skills to move to a city with more employment options, consider it. No Walmart plus no vendors equals no jobs.

David Glass is majority H1B so it is quite clear they will be included in techie cullings.

A few people may remember that a certain associate warned some of you in ISD that they were planning to outsource but no one believed it. Well, we all set up the India locations and trained them to take our jobs. Well done associates.

I tend to agree with many here. It looks like the techie jobs over at the David Glass ISD building are headed to india and to the left coast. I know there's a plan in play to stop renewing all but very high performing H1B visas as a way to help reduce headcount without layoffs.

I'm not sure Bentonville will become Detroit, but, I don't think Detroit saw it coming, either. The guy across the street from me is a Sr Director over there and I know he's looking and interviewing now.

I've said it here before--if you're going to buy a home, buy it in Fayetteville. The UA was here long before Walmart and it will be here when Walmart is gone.

I don't see the area collapsing like you're suggesting any time soon. While you may be correct that tech jobs are leavin Bentonville, the construction of the new home office makes it clear that business side jobs (buyer, management, legal, logistics, etc) will still be based here. When/if Amazon manages to cause Walmart to start shutting stores then it may turn into a Detroit situation but that's not now.

Bentonville has a long way to go before it gets to Detroit and its metro area. NWA still has JB Hunt, Tyson, and the vendor community, as well as Simmons. Having the U of A nearby also helps. The auto industry had way too much capacity and legacy costs and was long due for a major restructuring. People are still moving here placing increased demand for goods and services.

png, you are right. ISD jobs are definitely going away, but not the ones at HO. The original poster probably works at David Glass, hear they have been cleaning house since early this year.

I doubt all the jobs move. They're building that new Walmart campus after all. But I do believe most of the ISD jobs are gonna be gone.

Lesson learned the hard way: unless if your last name is Walton (or you're retired and independently wealthy), NEVER live and work in a one-horse, company town.
