Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Cutting even more hours to bring in new hires

I don't know if this is happening company wide, but I've heard that our DM is demanding that all part timers be cut to a ridiculously low number of hours in order to make room for the a supposed wave of new hires. I would assume that these new hires would of course be restricted to the same number of hours. So not only are we going to have to contend with people who know what they're doing having even less time to do any of what they're doing, but whoever they manage to s---er into working here will barely even have enough time to receive enough training to ever know how to do what they're supposed to be doing.

Having seen what our HR is going through, I don't pretend that we'd actually be able to attract any significant amount of new employees though. From what I saw of one week's efforts, there were actually over a dozen matches from various recruiting methods, of which only a handful ever passed the assessment, (let's be honest, how terrible would you have to be to fail it?) and of those, only a couple ever even showed up for interviews, and the one who was hired never showed up for their first day.

If our SM actually follows through on cutting everyone's hours, we then risk losing what few part-timers we have left. Even before this we've had over ten people quit in the past two months.

If Sears is clean sweeping the store of long time part time employees that means there are a lot of long time part time employees making above minimum wage. Sears wants cheap labor.

The old store that just liquiduated paid their employees $9.50 a hour. They slapped up signs for $13.00 to hire people to close the store down.

@2ewk Thanks for the input just sounds so different of what the OP posted they don't want to hire at all basically stay with the same crew course we will get close to 40 hours, but the work is going to be overload I will see later on if its a scare tactic or indeed this is legit.

@1xpt; Generally, a liquidating store needs more employees than it ever did prior to liquidation, so much so that whoever is left is often allowed their full 40 plus a little OT if necessary. Since so many people flee the sinking ship, the consultant will often have to resort to hiring from a local temp agency, which I assume has to cost more than just paying our dismal wages. Not to assume that you won't be closing (or any of us for that matter) but if it was already in the works, one would think they would be trying to get as many people hired just to slow down the attrition if it came to that.

I don't know if each DM is taking a different approach. I got word yesterday that apparently our store is not going to hire any seasonal workers. I still believe its a bunch of BS for them not to hire any seasonal workers at this point its crazy come xmas its going to be chaos and hell, but apparently co worker told me an ASM said it in the meeting our hours wont go higher for seasonal time. I feel its a scare tactic, but apparently it seem serious. I googled and I don't see no seasonal hiring for my store at all. Funny thing is I do see it in other stores, so could this be legit?

Could this be a sign we might close and they don't want to hire? Or is each DM taking a different approach?

Our district recruiter gets hardly any applicants and the ones she does get can't pass the drug test. We are getting the cast offs and the bottom of the barrel applicants that no one else will hire.

Why would Sears want to clean sweep a store? We have several part timers that are dedicated and reliable, even after getting less than 10-15 hours a week. Their hours are getting cut as a result of an overall lack of hours allotted to the store. Meanwhile, we are still hiring like crazy.

So, in other words, Sears wants to push out the old and bring in the new? Why, though?

If it was just certain stores, that would be one thing, but this was aimed at the entire district. What good are people who are willing to be trained when there aren't enough people to train them anymore?

Sometimes certain stores get targeted for a clean sweep of most associates, because, let's face it -- they really are that bad. Cut everyone to the bone as far as hours go, then bring in new people who aread willing to follow orders and be trained.

Considering that holiday hiring is going on and Target has announced they're paying $11/hr, Sears isn't even in the competition in most places. And what good is a paycheck for minimum wage x 10 hrs per week??

Considering the state of retail right now and all the layoffs, not just at Sears, everywhere, I think Sears could find people to hire without too much trouble. People don't care if and how long Sears will be in business, many just need a paycheck, period.

Even if it only lasts a few months, better than no paycheck.
