Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Acct associate here

This is what we were told. They had a conference call wednesday, told us cash office associates on Thursday we have til Dec 1st to find another position with the company or take the severance package. No details on the package yet. We were told it was a surprise to management and obviously was a surprise to us. Managers never talked to us about other positions within the club. Because they know they cannot give us full time hours anyway. It feels like a slap in the face for all the work we do. I am a 12 yr associate. I was lucky to find a better position thru transferring to Walmart but not all these associates may be as lucky. I see retail as a dying business. When Sam was alive it was about family and keeping things simple. You never heard bad things about Walmart when he was alive. We are just numbers and if they can get cheaper labor thru machined now, they will. It is what it is. I cannot stress anymore. I will do what I must and good luck with their f#cking machines. You know they will break down.

It almost feels like they are wanting the clubs to fail. Like someone else said. The managers come to us for answers on things they should know. Our club is glued together by the knowledge of our long term associates. I can't help but wonder how it will run in another couple years when all the veterans are gone. It'll be another sears. Gone. Especially with Walmart steadily competing against us. Seen a commercial for them stating "no membership required!" I was thinking this is crazy!!

Our Business office associate is being cut down to just 16 hrs/week. There is talk regarding receiving clerk and receiving team lead positions being eliminated. New jewelry cases are being installed in new clubs now and rumor says will be replaced in all clubs eventually. Does anyone know if this will eliminate Jewelry team lead, because nothing is being said about that. It is sad to see long-term associates being eliminated, because with them goes the sense of urgency, knowledge and superior member service. The younger associates aren't going to help with holding the club together in the same way. We actually take pride in our clubs. To the new generation, it is just a stepping stone to a paycheck. It's very sad that these changes are all about the almighty dollar.

The only reason they had to jump fast to tell the Assocaites .. the machines were coming in the back door this week. The roll out was ahead of them. I am on my 24th year with Sam's - It is tearing my Club Manager apart every time she has to displace one of us. The one thing they can not take away from the longer term Asspciates is the knowledge we all have. The new Assistant Managers are glorified stockers, ask one of them a question they come running to me for answer. The clubs can not function without knowledge.

any severance is on the wire. if you are waiting for someone to come to you then quit waiting it won’t happen. and by the way good luck nailing down a number. make sure you work a full 40 hrs till dec 1 as it’s based off last 12 weeks average.

So there will be no cash office associates at all? Not even part time?

I left Sam's after 9/11; decided life was too short to put up with all of the favoritism and other nonsense. Have never looked back, but have good friends who are 20+ year partners. Can't imagine how acct office will work now. S---s for you all!
