Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Hardware being sold to Lenovo?

Hear hardware was being sold to Lenovo as part of Oracle's transition to the cloud... and Lenovo needing some servers. #OOW17

It kinda makes sense though, if the price is low enough. let Lenovo take it over and rake in the support fees while Fujitsu takes over any new business. Any RIf is now lenovo’s Fault removing Oracle from the blame as Oracle tries to become a cloud company.

"What about the EVP Microelectronics?"

Mike Splain was missing in action for long time. He didn't attend any ME events nor did he give pep talk to the team. His service is no longer needed same as rest of SPARC hardware development team.

I just don't think it make any sense for Lenovo to be interested in this HW deal.

Agreed with the notion: X86 system would not add any unique value to buyer..

And no one would be in their right mind to buy the SPARC and SPARC based server knowing that M8 will be the last chip.

Heard from ME folks that in order to keep M9 going and bring up the system it will cost $1B. That might become the last straw for the whole SPARC project to cease.

HW sale, if you closely watch ORCL ER, had been declining for at least 8 Qtrs. [IBM's revenue had been declining consecutively for more than 20 QTRs]

https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexkonrad/2017/07/18/ibm-revenue-declines-for-21st-quarter/#5f57b8705dd1

During ORCL's 2016 DEC's ER Conf Call, SC already mentioned " To Take a Hard Look at Hardware".

http://fortune.com/2016/12/22/oracle-reevaluates-hardware/

And couple months later, 450 HW folks are being RIFFed.

2/15 marked the WWOPs RIF.

9/1: SPARC/system group RIF.

9/28 WWOPs: another round of RIF..

It seemed SPARC's destination had been decided last year.

Time to move on.. Best wish for all..

Why on heart should Lenovo be interested in Oracle HW lob??

The only valuable IP has been killed sept 1st , Oracle x86 has no added value at all with regards to what Lenovo already has.

btw, Lenovo is layingoff people since the acquisition of the IBM's x86 lob. and the same are doing all classic HW vendor like Dell, HP and the like.

Fuitsu is not really interested in the HW part, since they have one of the best SPARC implementation, they could possibly be interested in Solaris for the internal japanese market (where they have strong SPARC IB, even if declining double digit YoY), but since big O has a contract with them to support at least until 2034, why they should spend money on a dying business??

this is just a fake news. no one can actually be interested in Oracle HW lob, it will be just a not-so-slow death inside big red O.

Only X86 will be left among servers and Lenovo already has those from IBM. SPARC development has ceased.

Lenovo has plenty of servers. Didn't IBM dump their X86 server business on Lenovo?
