Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

My career at Dell is over. Seven years is long enough for me. Put my badge on my managers desk and walk out.

From an EMC perspective side: They have moved slowly to lowering raises and making them bonus based. Forcing people that are hourly and get over time to giving them a promotion that puts them on salary. That way if there is a bad quarter bonuses are not paid. They dont have to commit like they would if they give you a normal raise. Although I have seen in the past docking peoples pay that are on salary for a few quarters to avoid layoffs and save money. Back in the early days working at EMC an average raise was 5-7%. This has now turned into if your lucky to even get one its 1-3% and then add a couple hundred to the bonuses. But I need to say health care, 401k, and other benefits are very good. Cant complain on that area. Those areas are very important and do cost the company a lot more than people think....

...you've accepted 1% for more than a year? If the other benefits are needed and you don't have an ability to move out (for whatever reason) then that makes sense. If there isn't something else holding you there, I'm not sure why you're sticking around. On the support side (across Dell), the plan overall is to train the initial triage people to get someone that has essentially been silo'd into a tech role actually capable of resolving the issue off the bat. While this is good for the customer, it will limit upward mobility for anyone in support and effectively limit those that want to expand their skillset.

The contra-argument is that it will encourage people to acquire additional skills, but anyone using Dell internal training knows that it isn't that helpful in doing anything more than increasing a metric.

As a whole, I'd say Dell is a company that is deflating in technical value because they've lost focus on engineering and a reliance on "yes-management". There is rarely a voice of concern/dissent and when it happens, those people are cast aside..

5% in three years! I can only wish I got that kind of raise. Our Manager keeps giving us the same old story about no budget! 1% is average.

Handed my badge/laptop in last month.

The "market rate" for my position was low but acceptable when I started, but after 3 years and less than than a 5% overall raise, I put my resume out and went up 40% it literally 2 weeks. It wasn't just about money, I now have a much better work/life culture.

I don't hate the company and may go back someday. I was told some of the longer term employees that "Dell is the best 1st and 3rd job you'll ever have."
