Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Everyone knows that Pillar line of products don't work and sales s---

Why won't Oracle get rid of Pillar engineering? The product never did sell, the all flash array was a bomb and the product never really worked. Is it because of Elllison's seed money? The Pillar management has to be some of the most inept management known to any person. Then ZFSSA gets killed. I'm glad I left when I did. This place s---s...

Disclaimer - I worked in the Systems Group -> Pillar Org., and I was RIF'ed earlier this year. I was just one of the working stiffs though so I don't have any 'inside' information. To me it doesn't matter if they keep it or not.

"Why won't Oracle get rid of Pillar engineering? Is it because of Elllison's seed money?"

That's like asking 'why did they kill SPARC and Solaris' - who the f-- knows why they do what they do, none of it seems to make any sense.

I can guess though that they need storage for their imaginary cloud, and storage and the support for it from an external source is expensive.

"The product never did sell, the all flash array was a bomb and the product never really worked."

You are quite wrong on all points there, my friend. Hundreds (maybe thousands) of FS1 arrays are installed at external and internal customer sites and are working just fine. According to a friend that is still working in Pillar today, even new installs are still happening, but not sure how since supposedly it's not being sold to external customers anymore.

Even the next generation FS array is almost ready to be released but only for install in the imaginary cloud for now.

"The Pillar management has to be some of the most inept management known to any person."

No argument from me. Most of the upper management that was from the original Pillar company is still there, but in no-show jobs. They got some kind of sweet deal, still getting paid but never come to work or have to do anything.

"Then ZFSSA gets killed."

Sorry, wrong again. Sure, a lot of zfssa people got RIF'ed, but it seems the product is alive and well. Another friend in the US told me they had an all hands meeting not very long ago (but after the RIF) where they revealed the zfssa product roadmap. It will continue to be sold external and also used in Oracle's cloud (yea, yea, read/heard all the jokes and to me I don't care, it doesn't matter to me who 'wins').

It probably depends on which narcissistic psycho is in charge of it and who they s----up to. That would be my guess. Has nothing to do with selling products, just who's buddy-buddy with who.
