Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I've been duped into accepting a "hard lines zone supervisor" and found out the store I would be working at is going to close. Yay new job!!!

Never ONCE brought up during the interview. Had four interviews, FOUR OPPORTUNITIES to tell me! But no, i "casually" found out from the store manager the next day, AFTER I had already signed my papers.

Is that all I am worth? A temporary place holder, and then bye bye? Why even waste my time let alone their time?

What a blatant bait and switch! I learned more about Sears/Sears Holdings in a day than I ever knew.

Now I know why the HR/orientation guy was so "glad" the position was getting filled.

I wish I didn't give up my front end CSM position at Walmart, but I had to move to be closer to my mom who needed help with her health issues. I am so glad my husband has a good paying job with long haul trucking, so financially we will be okay, but i still feel furious, words can't even describe how mad I am.

It could be possible they offered the job quickly before having time to research. Hell, before I started working for the company 3 years ago I didn't know sears was close to bankruptcy either. I knew no news whatsoever about sears.

That being said I was just looking for a casual college job as a hardware associate as opposed to a supervisor position.

Look honey, the average ASM at Sears makes about $75k, a salesman in appliances who tries 90-100k all day long.

I’m sure u had a nice wiggle, wire something lo cut and maybe did a favor to steal this job. Congrats, u got sc^ed 2x. But these guys are right, you’ll make a quick 30-40k before the store closes and you don’t have to pay on your back to do it. Just take their money and enjoy the ride.

So sorry to hear about your situation.

Don’t get mad, just make as much overtime as you can and take any layoff exit package.

It will all work out, believe me I have lived through three of these bait and switch situations in my life.

God bless you and Keep the faith

The same thing almost happened to a friend of mine a few years ago at Sears. They were going to promote him to ASM Brand Central but at the last minute he decided to stay in sales. He realized he made significantly more as a salesman at Sears than the ASM position. Sure enough, 3 months later the store he would have been sent to closed and he would have been out of a job. The same thing did happen to another gentleman. He moved himself and his whole family halfway across the state to a Sears store to be promoted from soft lines lead to ASM Soft lines. He signed a one year lease. Sure enough, with no warning, the Sears store closed 6 weeks later. They didn't even give him the opportunity to apply for other management positions with Sears. Great company.

If I was thinking about hiring on with a company I would probably do a little research on it first. A simple google search on Sears would provide me with enough information to convince me not to work for the company. You have to be a fool to accept a job with Sears with all the negative information out there. Good God, people need to be more proactive (which is why I left over 2 years ago) and accept some accountability for their decisions.

Store level personnel are not informed of closures until the last possible moment. Take it as a lesson in corporate BS and move on. Don't waste time or money on fighting it. You have no legal recourse. It's aggravating but a lot of this stuff happens in a dying company.

i find it difficult to believe that someone wouldn't realize that these are temporary positions going in, or that the interviewer wouldn't bring certain things up. Of course. The level of dishonesty in business today is unparalleled in history.

Not a good situation by any means, but I have to believe that the folks who hired you didn't know at the time their store would be closed.

Sorry to hear that your store is closing, but take solace in knowing within six months this company will be totally liquidated due to inept management from the CEO down to the DM’s. They will start in chapter 11 but soon that will be changed to chapter 7. Mark my words on this.

Person wasn't working anyway--she said she left a job at Walmart to move closer to her mom. Wasted her time but not like she quit to take this job.

Work all the hours you can get and keep looking. Treat it as a day to day situation and If you can't get off for an interview just don't show up for work. Not like they are going to fire you at that point if they need all the help they can get and its not like you are in line for severance. Being employed and looking will look better than unemployed and looking. Might even give you an sympathetic edge if you get a chance to tell the story (the really brief version) in an interview.

"Stop your b--ching. The next 3 months you can make alot of money working overtime"

All that "extra money" will get s**wed over in the end because that person will be out of a job in 3 months..
