Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Sears ruined my husband's Christmas today!

I came home today and found my husband's 450-piece mechanic's tool sitting in my foyer. My husband had gotten home before I did and found it on our porch, WITHOUT a box, so he took it in, along with the rest of the mail and deliveries I had waiting.

My husband knows better than to open shipments in my name, especially around Christmas, and everything I've ordered so far from Sears and other stores was shipped in a box.

I know for a fact that it did ship witgout a box because the tool set had the address label affixed to the plastic case it came in, which was scratched by the way.

It is so shameful that a company I work so hard for does something like this to happen! I will be finding out which distribution center or store this was shipped from tomorrow, because the phone number bounces to a call center. When I do, I am going to give them a piece of my mind!

"Just as a side note (or Joke) we just got a new shipping scale that is suppose to tell us the weight of the item and what box to ship it in. The problem is we have no boxes."

@qby Sad... the cost of those fancy new scales probably could've paid for a lot of boxes.

"Sunday night we take his truck and roll through the neighborhood grabbing boxes."

@vwx LOL that is awesome. :-) Embarrassing that Sears is so hard-up for boxes in the first place, but that is a resourceful way of dealing with it!

You know, your husband could have been cool about it and pretended he didn't see the gift! Nope he had to make a big scene about it and ruin the joy of gift giving for you. There is plenty of fault to go around here.

My SM is good. Around here garbage day is Monday, so Sunday night we take his truck and roll through the neighborhood grabbing boxes. They’re everywhere this time of year. We usually can score enough for two weeks at a time. We chug a couple beers, he drives, I jump out and grab them, usually people break them down if not I use my old craftsman. We do order tape, tons of it to rebuild the boxes.

Totally get it.....it happens with larger items from all different companies. At least he is a grown up and not a child. That would really ruin a child's Christmas. I don't think adults get quite as upset.

Definitely return those tools and buy something decent. Home Depot's Husky line is pretty good.

I have been complaining about this all year! We have no choice must ship everything yet no large boxes. We did a,survey in the summer about what boxes we had ( though that would trigger a order) but just after thanksgiving we were told we had to order locally. We have been since august, guess what no boxes. My heart aches every time I self ship something I think is a present. Not the stores shipping fault just following what we are told to do or lose our job!! I am so sorry that this hAppened, if you have any sway please get us the supplies we need ( thAt s if we are here e0w8)

I remember when my Kmart store still did ship to home orders. We actually DID have some decent boxes at first, and we even got a couple bags of packaging peanuts once, but then the office lead became really stingy on supplies. We usually managed to make do with what he had. We'd steal the big piles of apparel plastic that they saved for our claims person, though that usually didn't please the claims person. We did have a reasonable supply of repack boxes too, although that caused conflicts near Christmas with layaways, and again the claims person. Naturally, the moment they became willing to order us boxes again, the DM shut us off of shipping a month later, so we were left with a pallet of useless boxes.

I do remember that sometimes we'd run low on apparel plastic, so we got really desperate on ways to safely pack things. We started taking boxes of out of date leftover ads and crumpling the pages up. Some idiots just threw the item in a box with no padding at all and hoped for the best. Of course there were the obnoxiously odd-sized items that people could order that we'd have to try to improvise a package for, which usually involved multiple repack boxes cut apart and taped back together in strange shapes. Examples I can recall were wall mirrors or those decorative multi-photo-frame things. I'm pretty sure that despite our best efforts, they never made it to the customer intact. Same went for TVs and flat-pack furniture. It almost always came back refused, and in such bad shape that we couldn't do anything but send it back to claims. What a waste of time, money, and effort.

Our store shipped almost anything that came in a shippable box in that box, no other box. Our store cannot afford to buy boxes and we have been told there would be no boxes for Christmas this year to ship things in. We were told to use whatever box we could find and if the item could be shipped in the box it came in to do that. Last Christmas we had complaints from many customers when we shipped toys without a box, just in the box they came in and the same thing happened, They came home with the kids and there was all their Christmas presents on the front stoop.

There have been other post in other threads about how the stores don't have the budget to buy boxes and they are shipping items in detergent boxes, food boxes or just wrapping them in plastic. Our store has three pallets of boxes to ship shirts or pants but no boxes to ship anything bigger. We have shipped lawn ornaments just wrapped in plastic in the summer and we got everyone returned. Sorry to hear of your ruined Christmas but this is happening in a lot of stores not just one.

Just as a side note (or Joke) we just got a new shipping scale that is suppose to tell us the weight of the item and what box to ship it in. The problem is we have no boxes. I guess, this is just another great idea that corporate had with no execution or budget to pull it off.

Does an employee need to know every single policy just because they work for the company? Besides, don't think there's any disclaimer on the website on how things ship.

Too late now in your case unfortunately, but a suggestion for anyone else who sees this: If you still have a close-enough store and the site gives you the option to, you should choose the in-store pickup option for anything you want to be a secret gift!! Some stores are not receiving enough boxes (especially ones suitable for longer, larger, or heavier items) to use for packing their ship-from-store orders, so they have to take shortcuts like this.

It's literally the policy to ship those without a box. However it comes off the truck is how it ships. Are you sure you actually work for the company? Seems like that would be something you would know...
