Recruiting? I’m in SP, the management of with is becoming more bizarre with each passing day. Their approach to recruiting runs several ways:

  • they cannot pull people into CSCO without offering pay well over grade. People inside have noticed their poor pay compared to the few newcomers.

  • morale and retention is becoming embarrassing. So much so that our last exec all hands, the word “talent” was mentioned about 15 times (never rated 1 year ago)

  • they are losing people at an disturbing rate, esp in the US BU. They are offering all sorts of inducements to buy people back at the last minute. There’s concern in the ranks that all the promotion slots and salary bumps for the stayers will be diverted to the leavers.

  • they continue to add layers of management. We’re up 3 layers added in the last 2 years. There’s rumors of some more splits coming. Current thing is to promote PM’s and TME’s to management roles and make their colleagues report to them.

  • they are backfilling these management elevations with India based engineering Folks pushed into,PM/TME roles - being managed from the newly promoted US guys.

Wondering how all this will end up. Down the road they’ll likely whack all those recently promoted managers, use Indian based managers to take over, and effectively outsource the BU product management/marketing to India.

Not in Cisco anymore.

Engineering demand and recruitment in the broader market is getting very competitive very quickly. Looks like a return to the 90s. Hard to believe anyone would start laying off engineers now that the demand is getting so high.

Wonder where this is coming from, given that the strength of several BUs in Bangalore has been reduced to half of what it was a couple of years ago.
