Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Whats really going on at GE Transportation in Erie, PA?

Have been told by BL's we are busy in 2018! They are calling back some employees. Even adding temp 2nd shifts, etc... We were told months ago, that 572 production employees were to be laid off by the end of the first qtr., 2018. Are they only trying to get as much done by this date, so they can lay everybody off or do we really have locomotive orders? India is up and online, Texas needs work bad! U can't trust management. They will tell you the sky is blue when it is orange. When we have our meetings, they are only optimistic. Have no actual firm commitments and no firm answers. I get sick of guessing and so do the other employees. THESE ARE FAMILIES THE COMPANY IS MANIPULATING PSYCHOLOGICALLY.

My take: They get as much done as they can by the end of the 1st qtr., 2018, maybe 2nd qtr. Lay us all off. We all run our unemployment out by the 2nd qtr., 2019. New contract in the middle of 2019. They announce a new spin off, bring us back to accept the NEW terms of the NEW contract! If you don't like it, go elsewhere... This forces our hand! I am a great poker player....................

Does this sound unrealistic? I say NO!

GE transportation isn't making money because of all the recent facilities they built in Texas and India that are now operating at low utilization factors. This has driven up costs sky high.

Because of this they are moving some production back Erie to lower costs in an attempt to make money. Unfortunately because of the big picture, GE wants to sell Transportation to raise cash now that they have destroyed the structure of the business with three facilities.

Take the work while you can before they sell or close the business

Did you guys vote in 2 tier or what? If so, tbey are probably just trying to move everybody around before layoff. That way when, and if , you get called back, you'll gladly accept your new rate.

Business downturn for sure, but, appears that the customers still like doing business with GE Transportation. If you really look at the rest of GE, Transportation, does not have near the problems that the rest of the businesses have from a right sizing standpoint, nor a cost standpoint, they just dont have enough orders right now.

Dunno about your prediction, but I do know right now it's all about maintaining appearances for GE, even while having to lay off thousands. Like so many corporations right now, it's an all out desperate bid to hold the ship up, or at least looking up while it's going down.

They will say and do anything, and I mean ANYTHING to accomplish this goal.

Lie? Every day, all day. No problem

Put up fake job postings? Oh yeah, going on all over the place.

Employ 5 times more people than they need to? Yep, anything to hold the social net up.

What we are witnessing is the last gasps of the status quo trying to hold back the storm they all feel blowing harder and harder at their faces. The storm will win, it always does, but they're not going down without a bloodbath fight.

Many only have a job right now because the status quo needs to support the "Everything is AWESOME!" narrative. But that will pass and when it does, you wont believe how bad it gets.
