Several in my area have attempted to move elsewhere in the company, yet despite being qualified, applications are being routinely denied. I’m talking about associates not even being offered the chance to interview. If it were only happening here and there, or just on one team, I might not think much of it, but it seems to be a pattern, and a very frustrating one at that. Some associates have been in the same role for years with no upward movement. Even lateral requests are being denied. It is no secret our area is horribly understaffed, but it doesn’t seem right to keep certain associates pigeon-holed while others move from one business unit to the other freely. Especially when the company likes to crow about how much opportunity there is to learn multiple aspects of the business by moving around. If certain associates are not earmarked for growth, leadership should just be transparent about it so those individuals could start looking in earnest outside the company, not blocking them from transferring to other teams because they happen to need a warm body in the chair.
Has anyone else had this experience of being too “business critical” that you can’t move to another position? Would be at least some small comfort to know we are not the only ones.
