Verizon Communications Inc. is cutting 190 jobs in San Jose, but this time around the layoffs don't appear to be related to its acquisition of Yahoo.
Layoffs will occur “across several business functions” at offices at 375 and 397 West Trimble Road in San Jose, according to documents filed with California labor officials. The roles affected include software engineers and analysts, most of whom held “senior” or “director” roles, according to the filings, and several roles were related to hardware.
“Verizon is consolidating and restructuring its operations to maximize the utilization of company facilities and resources,” human resources director Patrick Reilly said in the state filing.
The company declined to comment further to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
At least some employees were notified at the end of November. Verizon said separations are expected to be completed by Jan. 30.
The New York-based company has cut thousands of jobs related to its $4.5 billion acquisition of Sunnyvale-based Yahoo. But the latest San Jose cuts aren't related to that deal, according to an employee with knowledge of the layoffs who requested anonymity.
The source said cuts weren't related to the Yahoo integration but that it was a result of "product deployment" issues.
Verizon's San Jose office is one of four California locations and the only corporate office in the Bay Area. It is home to the company's product and new business teams, which are working, among other products, on its much-anticipated television streaming platform that is supposed to replace its existing Fios TV.
The Business Journal wasn't able to confirm if the layoffs were related to the new TV streaming platform or another product.
Post-Yahoo cuts
Layoffs have plagued the media company in the months following the Yahoo deal close, costing Verizon an estimated $500 million in severance costs.
In mid-November, Verizon's Oath subsidiary — the new umbrella company that's home to Yahoo and AOL — laid off 90 Sunnyvale employees, according to state documents. Those cuts were a result of Verizon integrating the businesses and media brands into a streamlined entity.
In January, Verizon laid off 60 San Jose employees who were associated with the company's hardware and its streaming app business, called Go90.
As of Nov. 16, Verizon had cut about 2,600 jobs total related to the Yahoo acquisition, according to TechCrunch.
“We’re about four months post-close of Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo, and we’ve made these changes to our team to further align our global organization to our 2018 roadmap,” an Oath spokesperson told TechCrunch last month.
