Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Full time

Sad to say right before the holidays our Kmart cut three full time positions today. Data/unit integrity, front end lead and reset lead. These 3 came in for their shifts today and were told to gather their belongings out of their lockers and punch out. Security walked them out. Right before christmas, sad. Store manager said this was only the beginning, a lot of part time going soon as well. We are a top 50 store so it don't matter. Just beware and be prepared....

Terrible. Now these folks are left with no job for Christmas. Unemployment benefits I guess but they've missed the holiday hiring season for part time elsewhere and here in my state minimum wage is $11 and you can extend your unemployment benefits if you work part time. Don't know your state but they could have had more options if this was October. And don't tell me corporate didn't know well in advance.

Getting let go during the holidays? Unheard of in retail even if you s--- unless you get caught stealing or kill someone.

companies with integrity do not lay off people 10 days before Christmas

This company lacks integrity.

I see the word "severance" mentioned in one of the above replies......Did the three associates in the original post get any severance?.....It sounds to me that they were walked out the door cold turkey with nothing.

If your store salary budget for the next few weeks comes in at a lot less than normal for this time of year, then hang on to your hats, folks! It's going to get ugly.

I'm trying to imagine the worst case scenario of what the rumors of the past couple weeks would entail at my store. We currently have SM, one ASM, one "supervisor" who doesn't do a hell of a lot of work, much less actual supervising. Then there are probably four FTs, two of whom are also key carriers.

The rumors would have it that everyone but the SM and the supervisor would be let go, and we'll magic another supervisor from somewhere. (I can all but guarantee that every single FT and the ASM, given the choice, would take their severance and walk right out the door rather than be stuck with a lower-paying and more stressful position.) That would mean, given that our opener is supposed to be there by 6AM and the closer out by no later than 10PM, fourteen open/close shifts would have to be covered by three people. There would almost never be any overlap in FT coverage, so they'd have a difficult to impossible time actually sitting down to an off-the-clock meal break without worrying about being called right back out to the floor.

Our PT staff is at about a third of what the DM claims we should have, not helped by the fact that he chased away our only HR. There are maybe fewer than a dozen register/service operators left, less than half of whom are reliable enough to be trusted to show up for their shift at all any given day, much less on time. There are maybe a bit over a dozen people who work on the floor in various departments. Many of those are from a work program for the developmentally disabled. (Ironically, they work harder and better than most of the regular hires, even if they are necessarily a bit more narrowly focused in their jobs.) None of them are going to be able to be key carriers, and none of them are going to know how to do anything like receive vendor deliveries or warehouse trucks.

We're already struggling to keep our backroom from being fully inundated with full pallets of freight as it is, so losing anybody at this point will just force us to refuse entire trucks if we're even allowed to do that. I can't imagine anyone stumbling into that open supervisor position and staying long enough to make a difference once they realize how much of a cesspit this company is, and the other supervisor I don't see staying very long if they are actually forced to do the job they have now.

Sounds like my Kmart, wondering if it is...if not it probably will be since we are suppose to be in the top 50.

That's is savage man not even letting them finish the holidays. It's going to be ugly if this is just the start of the cuts can't imagine how bad it's going to get.

We only had two of those three to begin with, and of those two, both are key carriers. We lose them and we don't have enough people to open or close the store.
