Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

ISD beware

If you are in ISD realize it no longer exists. ISD analysts you either need to high tail it to the job post and find a job at Corporate Underwriting or start acquiring some systems skills. The middle man role of telephone many of you have been filling between our corporate analysts and systems business analysts and systems analysts was never needed and that has been discovered. If you want to stay, start learning more technological info about the systems that support what you’re doing. With the new self directed work team concept your sitting there saying yay or nay is no longer useful. Systems teams have been carrying this bloated overhead for years. Learn how to write and execute test cases or something useful or unless you have connections you’ll be gone soon.

/The ISD managers are in the same pot as the systems managers as far as severance offerings which means ISD and Systems will now all be one. Same will happen when it comes time to figure out the musical chairs between ISD and Systems BAs./

It seemed to me that the OP implied more than just ISD going away. It implied everyone in ISD was pretty much history and needed to find other work post-haste.

While this wouldn't surprise me, I was curious if this was more than just speculation.

I have seen few ISD BAs who came into their jobs with any high level of technical acumen. Certainly can’t hold a candle to the Systems BAs I have worked with as a developer. The only ISD BAs I know with any technical acumen areyhe ones who came from Systems to ISD. To the person asking if ISD going away is a rumor...uh it’s already gone. The ISD managers are in the same pot as the systems managers as far as severance offerings which means ISD and Systems will now all be one. Same will happen when it comes time to figure out the musical chairs between ISD and Systems BAs.

/Having worked with ISD on multiple occasions, I can tell you that while some of them are perfectly nice people, they lack the business expertise that they are purported to bring it to the equation./

That has been my experience as well. They lack nearly all of the skills necessary to be a vital part of a Systems effort. This includes technical skills, business modeling skills, requirements gathering skills, and unfortunately, it even includes business process knowledge.

I'm sure there are exceptions to what I've said here, but this has been my experience. It sounds like it's also been the experience of many others.

Yes, ISD needs to go. Real business and requirements analysis needs to come back.

However, I hate to rub salt in the wound, as ISD is almost certainly on the way out and the fate of those within it is highly questionable.

I don't wish unemployment on anyone.

/You're missing something that I would guess the transition team is not missing - many ISD people came in as experienced hires often with extensive technical skills/

Oh yes, because the transition team has shown extensive operational visibility and decision making skills.

Oh wait, no, they're mostly just focused on the numbers.

Having worked with ISD on multiple occasions, I can tell you that while some of them are perfectly nice people, they lack the business expertise that they are purported to bring it to the equation. We will be far better off with that particular department being disbanded.

Well, anyone with "extensive technical skills" could apply for one of the highly technical JOPs currently open.

For example, there are like 90 java developer positions open. That is the direction the company is going.

I have no idea if there is any truth to this rumor. It didn't come from me.

However, just to point out, I am part of a group that ALSO came in with extensive experience and technical skills. And State Farm didn't bat an eye when they completely erased my group.

And maybe I'm wrong, but the people I've worked with an ID don't seem to have much to offer (at least not in their current role) in the model State Farm appears to be pushing going forward.

I don't know if the group will be erased. But I would not be surprised to see it re-purposed. I'd like to see our old BA's come back and the ISD folks shipped back to Corporate.

You're missing something that I would guess the transition team is not missing - many ISD people came in as experienced hires often with extensive technical skills. Wiping them off the face of IT would be a major misstep. I don't see any truth to this post.

While I think most people in Systems would be glad to see ISD go (ISD was a mess from the start and totally ruined our business requirements gathering process), do you actually have a credible source in leadership from whom you're getting your information or is this just your own intuition talking?
