Customers want to be treated better

Holiday sales in most retail places are doing well. Brick and mortar are still alive. It is the business that did not adapt (SHC, JCP, Macys) and did not give a great customer experience (SHC) or did not invest in the stores (SHC) that are struggling. THese days customers want nice, bright, clean, well maintained stores with great customer service, the same thing they have always wanted. Places like SHC has run down stores, that are dark, dank, moldy, outdated, with little help and horrible customer service (see the Sears forum page or their Facebook page).

As an example of what I mean I will look to fastfood. Look at Chic-fil-A. They sell chicken sandwhiches.

You can be the 40 person in the drive through line and you will be out of there in 5-7 minutes, tops. The store is clean, well lit. The employees are friendly, well mannered and know their job. I don't really like fastfood but if I do eat it I look for a Chic-fil-A for these reasons. Why spend my money on a company who disrespects my business? A business who doesn't care enough about me, the customer, to properly clean, light, maintain and stock a place where I want to give my business (MONEY). Why should I work hard to buy nice things and then go to a store who doesn't have the brains or desire to put me #1 and give good service? Why should I, who has limited time during the day, go to a store who can't invest in updated registers and hire enough cashiers to service the customer? Why should I, who works hard, has kids, go to a store who hassles me about signing up for a credit card I don't want or need? If anyone from the company can explain why I should shop at Sears or Kmart over Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Lowes, Home Depot or Amazon I would be more than willing to give them my business (MONEY) but as I an others have already done we have voted with our business (MONEY) and loyalty and shop elsewhere.

How can customers be treated better when first of all stores are understaffed? End of the day this is all the higher ups not giving enough hours to fully staff the associates. From CAC's to MCA's understaffed.

As for the customers not blaming all the customers, but the majority. This lady said she felt sorry for me because she said "customers are pigs I feel sorry for you" I said its fine its just part of the job. She saw how customers would grab things throw them in the ground not pick up for themselfs you name it. Customers don't make your life easy leaving go backs, not picking up for themselfs. It would be much easier if customers tried to be a little more clean on their end since we are already understaffed with tons of task to be done.

And Kohl's and JC Penney. I hate trying to find clothing there because every single piece of clothing on a hanger is on one that has a size indicator that doesn't match its actual size, and they're all hung in no particular order too. It's been like that every time I've been in like the past 10+ years. Everybody is understaffed and getting by on a shoestring to leave more profits for corporate pockets - or in Sears' case, to fall out of the holes in corporate's pockets.

It's amazing how people will stand in line for 20 minutes for overpriced coffee at Starbucks, and I've seen this, but will whine about being in line for 6 minutes. If you are upset about not having enough cashiers, then you need to put the blame on the CEO. We don't control the schedules that are made or the transition that occurred earlier this year that combined the cashiers and MCAs. I have been in stores including Belk, Home Depot,and Wal-Mart and you can't find help there and the place also a mess. So don't try to act like it's just Sears who has messy stores and is understaffed it happens everywhere, true facts.

Our DM sent a ranting and raving email whining about the conditions of the stores he toured. He demanded that he wanted an associate assigned ALL DAY to such and such department to keep it straightened, to the tune of at least half a dozen departments. Problem is...we never even have that many available floor associates (including whatever key carriers, managers, etc. are there at any given time) at once, much less can we spare every single non-register worker to just keep straightening. If we attempted that, all freight would cease, trucks would pile up worse than they already are, and no layaways or online orders would be getting done.

Clean? Oh if ONLY customers behaved like adults when they shopped, with manners one might have thought they SHOULD have been taught when they were children... I hate when people want to be treated like some kind of VIP, but come in treating the store, its property, and employees like their personal dumping ground in various ways.

The vast majority of people at my store are very kind and helpful to the best of their ability... Unfortunately the company thinks it can keep us, like most any store now, on a skeleton crew yet still expect great customer service (AND every other task it expects us to also handle) as if we have 3x the mount of people. Company and customers both forget that we're only human, can only do so much, and our hands are tied at the lack of customer assistance and cashiers in a given shift.

thn- Please get an education. Brick and mortar retail is doing well. The companies that are not doing well are the ones that have failed to adapt or who have been bought by a hedge fund and have been stripped of assets. Online sales are still only 8% of all retail sales so if they are not shopping online they have to buy stuff from somewhere. Are there bad retail companies? Yes. Are there good retail companies? Yes. But to think that retail is dying and there will not be brick and mortar retail in the future you are crazy. Even Amazon is opening physical stores to capture another aspect of the buying public.

Employees don't care is so wrong to be stated. Its the rude, nasty, uncaring, sloppy customers who come in to shop and trash the stores. When you have freight and projects to do but have to spend 3 hours straightening after they trash everything will make for an uncaring employee. But most do care!!!!!

The sad thing is that there are still a lot of us that actually do care and who do try to help customers to the best of our ability, but the damn company just undermines our best efforts and intentions with everything they do. Someone asks where something is? There was a time when I'd be happy to walk them over and keep helping if they needed. Now, they're lucky if I can just kind of point them in the right direction before my walkie-talkie utters an annoying message from one of the pushbuttons around the store, as I might be literally the only person there who's not tied to a register. Then there's all the BS that can come up at the registers due to nearly none of the company's programs (whether it be SYW or credit cards or layaway or whatever else) working as they intended, or the registers just outright breaking as they do everyday. There's just so much that goes wrong due to the company's Scrooge-like miserliness (although in fairness to Ebenezer, he ran a successful business) and we can only do so much without burning out.

I went to Sears to buy a Christmas gift and some clothing. I stood in line behind a woman. I had cash but the cashier told me to get behind a line of 10 people which came after me. I explained to the cashier that I was next in line. I roamed the store looking for a cashier but there were very few cash registers that were open. I finally gave the items to an employee and walked out of the store.

I don't think the employees really care about the customers. Second of all, there was no employee at the jewelry counter. There is not enough employees working for the Christmas season.

It is just a matter of time before Sears goes into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. in 2018. I hate to see an American icon disappear from the scene. The company was destroyed by mismanagement and incompentence.
