Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

50+ employees

Anybody else noticing how quickly the employee demographic at General Electric is changing? People in their fifties and to a lesser extent those in their late forties are becoming an endangered species here.

Just look around you and you'll notice that most of the faces you see are at best in their thirties. Scary thing is, the transition has happened just in the past few years, it's not a gradual process.

I'm not saying we don't need young blood, we do. But we also need older employees if GE is to recover. It'd be nice if somebody up top realized there is no substitute for knowledge and experience and stop letting go of our best workers to save a little on their pay.

I saw a lot of blatant age discrimination in my job, where younger people received a lot more coaching and opportunities to attend meetings and do interesting projects. it's probably a good idea to talk about it with the Ombudsman and then the EEOC is where complaints get filed. Maybe the EEOC will look into it if enough people complain.

I am 55+ and was targeted several years ago and forced to accept a demotion/downgrade (no loss of salary but no increases since and major cut in bonus each year). There is no doubt it is age/demographic related, I am an American straight white male in a global operations facility that is been taken over by late 30 something's that include numerous women, g--'s, and international people who have little deep domain knowledge of GE or its operations but they fit the contemporary profile that has been the model the past decade or so. Most have little expertise or common business knowledge but they can spout the "Belief's" and have good Power Point skills so they are considered key contributors, even if they know nothing of the business. The past 6 years have been the worst of my 37 year career and hope on my end is that benefits will not be cut too badly this next year before I am eligible to get out at age 60.

Anyone over 50 and who is on the pension is being targeted. They are either being let go or made so uncomfortable to try and force them out. Why are there not numerous ombuds complaints about this. Everyone over 50 should file one asap!

Are people laid off by GE being allowed to replace the H1B holders or does GE keep the H1B's?

Not just 40 plus employees even mangers being replaced. Careful if asked to mentor a grad even if boss praise you and seems to likes your recents work. Means your paycheck is up for next schedule layoff. This happened to friend.

Many of the companies try to imitate what GE does for some reason. I don't know why. I have worked at several sites and have seen some of the worst management imaginable. Getting rid of experienced people is just stupid and short sighted. Problem is that the managers often have no clue how to improve a business that they no nothing about. It's just cost out cost out cost out blah blah blah. Morons.

This is the strategy everywhere in almost every usa company tech or industrial. Managrrs openly talk about it so it should be not surprise. 40 plus and you are on radar. They will fire you at the first opportunity. Starter Worker age is also coming down as workers are getting into work force earlier and are very ambitious aggressive. real issue for jobs for middle age workers is not H1b or outsourcing but local younger workers. They will take your paycheck. Company will do this under the guise of college placements, leadership programs or moving out jobs to other states.

I was laid off and replaced by a younger, less qualified, friend of the boss. The learning curve to get this new person up to speed is still going on. It happens alot at GE. It is not what you know but who you know and if rumors are true ... it is who you do. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.

GE seems to do the technically legal, but very unethical, things all the time. They lay off just enough young people (probably those without the sweet CAS or program connections) to avoid age discrimination complaints. Just like they stagger their layoffs by site to avoid triggering WARN notices.

Has civility gone out the window? Aging comes to us all but there's no need to throw an older person onto the scrap heap and maybe never work again. There may not be any rule to stop this but the unspoken rule in any civilised society is everyone is entitled to be given a chance to sustain a decent living and not be thrown out the door to make a bit more money. If society loses its conscience then savages will rule.

I believe managers are targeting older workers and this is age discrimination. GE lays off just enough younger workers to get around this? While this may technically be legal, it certainly is not moral and is eroding the Company of the knowledge it desperately needs to retain in order to survive.

The problem is that GE has treated the older employees, the ones with the actual knowledge, much of which GE paid for them to acquire in the form of certifications and accredations so shabbily that they don’t want to stay because of the toxic environment created by incompetent management.
