Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

An observation

I've been on this site for a few years already and I notice every time the isht is about to hit the fan with massive layoffs we see an increase of union VS non union posts on here. I submit to you that the majority of these might be shill posts meant to misdirect the anger of the lay off victims AWAY from the multi million dollar executives that are making the lay off decisions and TOWARD the fellow working stiff union worker (just because he still has a job) I just want to say that I'm a wireline union member and I get no pleasure in seeing either the non union wireless employee or wireline mgmt employee lose their jobs. Nor have I ever heard my fellow union members express pleasure at the bad luck of the non union workforce. Good luck to all.

Better dust off your picket sign. 2019 is right around the corner. Better start saving now too because I remember how many were compalining about having money issues in 2016.

No layoffs at Wireline. Union workers have a contract that has language in case of layoffs. Buyouts the layoff by location or seniority.

Wireless is just pick and fire. I’ve seen too many coworkers who went to wireless only to be shown the door after doing a great job. All you wireless employees that b--ch about the union keep it up. The next sacrificial lamb may be you. Keep up Lowells multi million salary and packages. To the union wireline employees. Sit back, relax and watch the exodus.

I agree. When we bought out Vodaphone, that left our financial coffers empty.

Things started the unraveling process when the T-Mo/AT&T merger failed and T-Mo got $6 billion in "break-up" fees.

They wisely reinvested that cash into their network and heavy-duty promotion.

They also brought on that firebrand (and very definition of "douche-bag") John Legere, who has since upended the wireless industry in its entirety.

At the time, their network was still a patchwork of poorly built out metro areas. They've since grown into being a worthwhile competitor.

They also have a lock on the millennial market and know how the f@%k to market their product.

They've been eating our lunch ever since.

We, on the other hand, bought up the 90s and have no clear direction to keeping our #1 spot of subscribers. (Hint: 5G is NOT our salvation).

Wow. Someone's head is in the sand.

"I do my job, I do my job well, I get paid for the job I do and get paid well for it, and I go home to my family."

Yep...until Verizon realizes that...hey...this guy is redundant. Also...he makes too much money.

Then, on some Novemer/March day, you get called into your manager's office and have "that talk."

You get offered a package (not his...although, I'm sure his package would be much more appealing than the bull$hit ones VZ is offering as of late), and away you go.

Nothing you can say or do will change their decision to dump you. No warnings...No options...No recourse. Just unemployment.

I will say, having this discussion with you is like arguing with your idiot uncle on Facebook. It won't change your opinion.

It may, however, help someone else who is teetering on the fence to either proactively bounce or work together with others to organize.

I wish ALL of you, union and non-union alike, the very best of luck!

From working over 12 years in wireless I can say it all went downhill after we merged with VZ Comm in 2014. Wireless turned into the same oppressive, miserable environment that was already VZ Comm.

@juo you have a master degree and you are not management or you have a master degree and don’t understand that the union does not organize management? Which is it?

Either way could you please let us know where you got your degree so we don’t waste our money.

Your long winded diatribe was a waste of everyone’s time. Some people would prefer NOT to get laid off or live under the constant threat of lay-offs. Unionization can be a good option for those people. Unfortunately, for a very long time wireless employees bought into VZ’s lies and organizing now would be a very difficult propostion.

I wish everyone good luck heading into the end of the year. We all know that Verizon has ruined the holidays for many of our former coworkers over the last few years.

@juo

I am glad you are not in my union as you are a long winded and quite dopey fellow.

You boastfully claim great qualities for yourself, clearly implying that union members lack these qualities. In truth there is no logic in your claims any more than implying that people who have health insurance are physically unhealthy. I am surprised you have a master’s degree since you have no understanding of logic and can hardly write at the high school level.

@OP

I agree with the sentiments of your post, just had to respond to yet another tiresome union basher.

As far as I know, it's not management who decides who gets the axe. That's finance. Management gets a list of names and that's all she wrote. In wireline, they offer voluntary buyouts to reduce headcount (for union/non-management anyway). This year some departments had more people wanting to take the buyout than they could afford to lose so everyone that went from those areas were on a volunteer basis. So really the union didn't have to decide anything.

@QbO Would it be different if wireless was largely union? Union would decide who would stay with reduced headcount vs management deciding.

@xkj. How can you seriously NOT understand why the subject of unionization comes up on a website that is visited by people that Verizon has laid off by the tens of thousands, (and others that may soon be joining the ranks of those laid of) when the union members don't have this worry? I'd say unionization is a very valid topic here and could possibly help those still hanging on from getting the axe in the future.

It's a "layoff" site. It is here to share rumors about being laid off. Why would union employees post here at all? They don't get laid off correct?

There should be a a concerted effort to unionize all Retail Workers in VZW by the union. I have never understood in the last few years that hasn't happened?

Happy to finally see there's some semblance of compassion left. Whether Wireless or Wireline...like it or not

we're all under the VZ umbrella and suffer the consequences of their decision making. They'll continue to pound their chests-proud of how they contributed to all this cost savings at everyone else's expense. That's fine..what goes around comes around. With hope, everyone on here can just agree to disagree and somehow remain united unlike the rest of this country.

OP, it is a sad product of the internet where faceless people seem to get their rocks off. I guess it is naive for us to expect human compassion in an anonymous world. smh.

Don't agree. Since there's no serious effort to unionize wireless, why would wireless management care? Most of the postings are complaints about rifs, verizon culture, and management.

Agree, and that is coming from wireless management. Focus the disdain and question the efficacy of leadership and not each other. Most of us do our part commensurate to our salaries and recognition. Question the leadership's decisions made under the guise of core values, diversity, or customer care while they allow torpid and incompetent executives to auger our company in the ground. Those same vapid and inspirational fourth generation executives who contributed nothing to the organization's evolution, who are only in it for an extended magic carpet ride, are then allowed to quietly and briskly slither away like a chameleon with a contrail of cash following close behind. Question those activities and bond together. A close workforce is a corrupt leadership's biggest fear regardless if it is unionized or not. Good luck to all union and non union employees over these next few weeks.

Classy. Most of the people here are simply concerned about their / family future. No need to throw stones or take any pleasure from misfortune of others. Good luck everyone.
