Thread regarding IBM layoffs

More contractors cut.

Nov 10th no notice given, at least IBM waited till the end of the day to let them know.

I was cut as a contractor at the end of 3Q saying my contract, which was just renewed 60 days ago, was not going to be renewed. I've been around IBM for almost 25 years, first as a regular employee and the past 5 years as a contractor, so I get it, 4Q stretch goals. But in the round that I was cut I know of 7 other contractors who were all former "regulars" who were cut. Now 6 weeks later, I hear of 3 more contractors who were former regulars were cut last Friday. This included the one who I transitioned my work to! Coincidence? Next I contact my contracting firm about a posting on their job board about a position that I'm a perfect fit for. The response is "That's in IBM. I cannot submit you for that." They would not elaborate further. Don't think I would want to put myself back in that situation anyway.

"And tomorrow's the 14th, probably the last day they can give people 30 days notice and get them out the door before the Dec 15 401k matching date."

IBM is not required to give 30 days notice..

One thing I do expect regarding the Dec 15 401k matching date is that soon after we'll see a lot of employee departures. Almost everyone I talk to is sick of the stress and has been looking around. A few have just recently left, 401k match be damned. So maybe that's the 'voluntary' December RA. Maybe IBM defers in December just to gauge that and factor it into how many they let go in January.

I think they are done for 2017.

2018, that's a different question.

I think we'll have a bloody January as we always do, check out Jan 2017 posts on this site, or check out 2016.

Every year since the 401K match change someone predicts there will be layoffs in the lead up to the Dec 15 match date, but it's never happened. It usually happens in the first quarter. I think it has more to do with the 4Q numbers than trying to save money from the match.

As I am aware, 2 contractors will not be renewed. They will be cut by the end of this December.

Just checked here and on watching IBM. Last year there were cuts that were scheduled for December, but Ginni got added to Trump's business advisory council so in fear of her being embarrassed they were postponed. Then the RAs happened starting Jan 5 and continued for a bit in Jan. This time last year the whole relocation/co-location thing was in full swing.

But there were a lot of contractors cut in mid-Nov last year, just like we're seeing now based on the OP above, so maybe we'll see the same cycle and more RAs in Dec or Jan. Happy Holiday's, y'all?

And tomorrow's the 14th, probably the last day they can give people 30 days notice and get them out the door before the Dec 15 401k matching date. Or maybe the Ginni-grinch will allow folks to have at least that and hold off on the cuts until end of year or beginning of next year. I forget if there were cuts around this time last year, but things are worse now, 22 straight quarters of declining revenue, stock in the tank, etc.
