Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

I am new at qcom

But looks like so many engineers are leaving and project starts falling apart. Is this just me feeling that way?

I joined Qualcomm in 2015 just before a major layoff. I took a pay cut to be in San Diego and work on “cutting-edge “ technology. I should have been suspicious when they hurried me through the process to get me onboard. Not all is bad but there are other options with longer growth opportunity.

OP, if you are young or a recent graduate, run as fast you can and go into another industry. This is now a mature industry.

For really experienced folks who have been in this industry 10 - 20 years or so it is hard to transition now into something new. The domain skill set it is no longer valued by other companies except the handful of the main competitors. FAANG doesn't care much for Q skill set except for Mavrick if you can get in there.

Q has no brand cache in looking for another job as it did years ago. Most people view Q as a HW company outside the industry. In a world of SaaS, PaaS, cloud, etc. HW doesn't go that far.

In old days you could run to operators but those guys don't seem to care much for Q skill set either. In general operators have become more of a marketing company and value more of the marketing (fluffy per Q standards) skill set.

I got out to a FAANG player and have no regrets...except I am working my tail off for $$ now.

I think the chaos and uncertainty will make me a stronger person assuming I am not layoff. I am practicing the Chinese as preparations however.

@qky This is a site where people post about layoffs. If you read the latest posts on this site, then you will only read about (potential) layoffs. If you look at the world through these glasses, then THAT is really the myopic view.

There are a lot of places where people are quite happy and don't have to worry about lawsuits (with customers!), mergers, acquisitions, and so on. After all, Q was a place like that once.

I have enough friends at other companies to know that things are far better there.

Yes, and what you folks haven't figured out yet is that it isn't just QC where things are bad. People are myopic by nature and never consider that what's happening in their fishbowl could be happening elsewhere too.

Well it is, just read "Latest Posts" a while for an eye opener.

Well what is the "cutting edge high-prestige area " then?

No it's not just you. Everyone on my team is quite open (except to our manager) about how they are very actively looking for something new.

It's a combination of the knowledge that mergers/acquisitions ALWAYS result in redundancies, lots of stupid people in upper middle management and the general feeling that mobile technology is becoming stale and isn't the cutting edge high-prestige area anymore that we once felt it was.

Oh, that and the knowledge that if Q falls apart, it is better to get out early rather than late.
