Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I was escorted out

When I got Rif'd last year after being brought to the managers office at 8am he handed me a RIF packet and letter saying my services were no longer required.

He followed me to my 4x6 corporate cube with a box and watched me gather my personal items and then followed me to the door. No time to gather any files off my computer as it was already taken out of the system by IT security.

This, while all the other workers were watching. Very embarrassing but expected from that outfit.

I feel for ppl who work faithfully, have great work ethics and are dumped with no explanation and no regard as to why.

Walked out at end of day, on a Friday and asked for your badge. Left with little dignity, as you are embarrassed by security standing watching you pack your personal items, then walking you out! Everyone wonders what you did to be treated like that.

They wouldn't want you to steal any staplers, pencils, or note pads!!!!!

At Verizon Wireless RIFF's ......ARE!!! happening 11/16/17 with about 10% of the workforce being targeted on the Network Operations side. Leadership is saying most will hit upper/mid and lower level managers but a significant percent will be from the technical/engineering staff which does the day to day work to keep a reliable network up and running. Makes no sense, they VZW has already completely cut all overtime and now are expecting us to pick up the additionl work load once this RIFF has been executed. Consolation is they will only have to rehire most of the folks back when the network reliability suffers from lack of work force and the build cycle is not meet.

Stop the Pity Party!!

It's so sad that year after year it's the same old story... layoffs, crazy quotas, toxic culture, leaders in it for themselves, greed. Aren't you tired of this mess?

Get off the pity party wagon and empower yourselves to go to another company that respects you and values you. Remember to take care of yourselves... you're a number at VZ - if you dropped dead they would replace you in two weeks. Get your priorities straight and stop grabbling...seek new opportunities, build new professional memories, meet new colleagues, go where you enjoy the environment....it's possible... believe in YOU!!!

When someone is told to leave involuntarily the management sometimes gets nervous that a "dead man walking" can hurt morale. Or they might worry that the person might become disruptive or merely negative about the company in retaliation.

At the higher levels, like SVP and above, it's all about who's your friends. Their performance is about perception, rather than reality. There are some high level leaders who effectively blame others for their poor performance (c.f. Go90) and get to hang around because somebody up there likes them.

It varies by department and role. 2015 in an Area HQ, some were told to keep showing up to work, but given the task of finding another job as their only responsibility. Some were told to go home and stay there.

Most companies will walk individuals off the property some will give you a change to get your personals, others will say we will send them to you or you can pick them up tomorrow after whatever time).

An office or a group all in one area will have their system, facility, & phone access disabled and then give then x minutes to collect their personals and security checks the box on your way out. Often done at the end of (or early before) a workday as a "mandatory meeting" when most other staff are not present. I have seen it happen more than once.

Stupid thing is most organizations are doing it to move workers offshore which they were told they will save x dollars. In the end they find that they had huge savings in X, but had more expenses in Y & Z which made the offshoring just a movement of expenses.

What they didn't see until later was the loss in customer retention due to poor service or increases in errors.
