Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

November 2017 Layoff Log Check-in

Hey all. There's a lot of fragmented posts on here that have zero to do with actual layoffs.

As such, I thought it would be a good idea to have a specific thread devoted to anything credible that we know.

On the Wireless side, in the past during the week of a layoff, Tuesday (today) is the day Directors and DMs typically get notified if there are any cuts to their teams.

Wedesdays are when "impromtu" meetings with Directors/DMs and their direct reports happen, and those individuals are then informed of everyone on their team who will be impacted.

Thursday is the "bring the pain" day, when those GMs and/or team Managers (network, training, finance, HR, etc.) get to break the bad news to the affected individuals. This is always done in company with a member of HR, either in person or via a phone call.

For this one thread, please be courteous to your fellow Verizon brethren. Please, no union bashing, unnecessary sarcasm, and the like. Remember these are your work brothers and sisters that are losing their livelihoods, which can be devastating. Please be so kind as to be respectful in your comments and again, only post things you know are credible.

I wish everyone on here the VERY best of luck, hoping you get your package (if that's what you want) or to keep your job.

Please share what you know below and thank you in advance. :-)

Who cares what this giant of a company does. They are severing people to get rid of that 10B they need to get down to. That means, by any means necessary.

They are becoming a different entity, they are metmorphing of an unknown species.

""FIOS being sold to Comcast. Wireline being sold off to many companies. Wireless being transformed and major merging and news to hit the pike soon.""

Hmmm .... really skeptical about all of that. For one, Comcast has no need for the Verizon FIOS network. Not much wireline left to sell and what there is will be a hard sell; I seriously doubt any Board of any wireline company would be willing to buy the wireline side.

At best the copper side (OSP/CO) could be spun off to thrive or die on its own accord. Problem with that is what does Verizon do with all the transport equipment that is the back haul for the wireless side and would also support the FIOS net? Does the newly merged and newly defined wireless side, which would be the only face of Verizon do a lease back on transport and back haul? Perhaps so. Regardless of that, I really do not believe Comcast would buy the FIOS much less the FIOS and the wireline side.

Even more so; what becomes of the horrendous debt load? Anyone really think Comcast would be willing to buy the FIOS and or wireline side and its debt? I seriously doubt Comcast would be willing to do that. That leaves only a spin off of the wireline side to function as its own entity and completely free of Verizon involvement.

Wow if that is true that is great news for Comcast. Not so good for Wireline. Those guys are probably going to wish they got riffed when they get the GTE treatment and lose the big Verizon severance. IF this is true.

"Had a meeting today with Senior Director. Looks like I'm getting the axe too. After 12 years with this POS Company. From what I'm hearing the company is being sold off in pieces in the coming months. FIOS being sold to Comcast. Wireline being sold off to many companies. Wireless being transformed and major merging and news to hit the pike soon. Glad my severance was generous and I have health benefits for over a year. FU VZ I'm moving forward!!!!"

That's quite a prediction.

Interesting thread, a good friend of ours in NYState was given notice today and, unfortunate, signed over his pension several years ago - not smart. Result of of course panic and fear. I have learned to watch this site, too, for my own job and others. I wish BEST of luck to all Verizon people who have suddenly vanished.

"The wireline folks completely ruined the wireless side of the business." Right, and absolutely nothing to do with the fact that wireless market got saturated, it was Lowell (a Wireless guy) who bought out Vodafone at what have been the top of the market .....

But anyway: Wireless/Wireline, Union/Management, Indian/US really shouldn't be the divide. Top execs vs the rest.

So today is the day! I know it doesn’t help but in Michigan “some” Wireless Employee’s WILL be given their “layoff notice”. Like mentioned above Thursday is typically the magical day so yes I can Verify that Thursday is going to be a bad day for a lot of people at VZW unfortunately. This is NOT “rumor” this is cold deplorable fact.

It's funny that they want to save 10 Billion by 2020 sounds like the exact number that we spent on Yahoo and AOL

Was part of the layoff in May. Still have not found a job. Hope that not too many are affected and that most took notice of the last layoff and got their resume updated. The wireline folks completely ruined the wireless side of the business.

Found out today that Quality Assurance Field Managers are going to be hit hard. They are not going to find out until after they do the notifications. The field can't keep on top of things now. What a train wreck.

I was part of the layoff in May as I was an RSS, this is definitely not a joking matter as this is "your livelihood" and one supports their family. It's taken me awhile to find a job since being laid off from VZW, the pay is half of what I made and benefits are horrible, I hope all goes well for those affected on Thursday.

All I know is that I am a manager and had to attend one of 8 notification sessions. Every one was packed (mostly VzW), and the first 6 sessions I couldn't get into the webex. They had 200 ports for each. So that tells me at least 1600 supervisors are RIFing. This is going to be big, and I think VzW is going to get hit hard. Fasten your seat belts.

Are there any talks about a RIF within national indirect? We had a huge RIF last year. Are we next? I have seen two conference calls cancelled that pertained to systems.

Last year AT&T removed all account Managers from both indirect and National positions. I am curious as to what this will until for our company.

To any who are severed, I hope you find something very soon and pocket the money while investing in yourself. I hope to do the same if this is the final curtain call.

We had a call this morning with the Training AD out west this morning. She just announced she was taking a new position. Nothing about headcount cuts.

Consistent word is they're cutting 10% this round and there's 160K employed. I've been out since May so good luck to all affected however it goes.

Look at the senior managers and supervisors who have left and/or transferred to another department in Chandler. This site is not protected by tax abatements. Good luck to all!

Wireless IT, I found the paper work for several of my employees in People Soft for HR with the 11/16 notification date. I wasn't told about it so that means I am gone also. We already barely get any new software completed like we used to, it is all about metrics the can phony up. We operate like the TSA now it is all theater with nothing getting accomplished. The beginning of the end is when they merged Wireline and wireless. All failed Indian wireline managers were put in charge and we kept nothing that worked from before.

Confirmed RIF is coming in San Jose Thursday 11/16. Mandatory meeting in the morning, thereafter it will happen. Don't know the %, but looks like some people are kept on a product that supposedly cancelled (IPTV). Just want my severance package and move on, no hard feeling. Its a great company, but leadership is very questionable.

I talked to my manager because I asked to retire (I can't take the yearly rif) he is worried about his job. I was told the director will be at whatever locations managers are at who are being let go. There are cuts being made in my department but I have to say my manager feels sick to his stomach and he doesn't know if he will have a job by the end of day Thurs either. The way this company is run anymore. S---s

Some Piscataway IT managers already sending mandatory morning meetings to employees for 11/16. The building is already majority Indian...might as well do away with the charade and serve Indian food every day in the cafeteria there.

Retail:

If cuts are going to occur on Thursday it may be like when the Exp/Ops reps were phased out into RSS. They were still set to work for several weeks until a "Final date". By doing that they will have the head count for Black Friday

Already know something is up in retail. My GM is back from vacation on Wednesday for 2 hours and then working Thursday morning before they go back on vacation for 4 days. They did the same thing when the RSS folks were laid off. My DM told me yesterday he had an important call today and he was nervous about lay offs again. Good Luck to everyone.
