Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I'm 52 and working for government contract job after gotten laid off from Verizon / XO layoff in May.

Re experience, the outplacement service was suggesting 8-10 years experience is the sweet spot, with more you are obviously stuck in your ways/not up to date/too expensive Of course, lots of variation depending on the position.

At one point, I was advised to look at big companies IT, because they understand more what experience at a place like VZ means, where as startups are going to want (or think they want) a very different type. Also advised that if your salary is high because of your years there, you may need to settle for less, unless you can very clearly articulate why you bring more NEEDED stuff than a cheaper younger person.

It's not too bad in your 40s (unless you want startups), late 50s is harder, as the extra experience doesn't mean that much, and the negatives increase.....

I think there's a lot of "it depends". I have 2 friends who have recently gotten good jobs in their mid 60's, but they are energetic, work hard, and have a great reputation among their co-workers.

It depends on stuff like what are your skills. You're up to date on some usuable technology, or a great salesperson, that's going to help. You've been working on 20-year technology for the past 5 years, that's going to be hard. Attitude also helps - being open to change, not being in the mindset of "we used to do it like this", and showing that you want a new job because it sounds interesting.

Wish the answers were easier.

I've seen a lot of people on here landed at Comcast so be glad they're in your state - I'm mid-50s and had 25+ years - was in the May RIF and still looking, Have heard another peer in Tennessee was hit during the '15 RIF and still hasn't landed as well so its subjective and logistics. It was also recommended to put just the last 10 years on the resume but once you fill in college dates, it aint rocket science. Best wishes to all in any event.

Most of the worried 40+ people are union or currently making more than they deserve or just plain worriers.

At around 40 you've accumulated about 20 yrs of valuable experience.

It is around your 40's that you are supposed to be at the peak of your

abilities and powers. I'm in my mid-50's, and if I'm RIF'ed I'm not worried

about getting another job. I'll beat any millennial out there in any job

interview. That's supposed to be your attitude man.

Relax...one day at a time, believe in yourself and get out there and do it! :-)
