Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Loyalty to Employees

I'm bewildered by all these people who feel betrayed or lost or emotionally harmed because the company has repaid their perfect attendance or stellar reviews or all-around perceived value with an unceremonious layoff after 20, 30, 35 years of dedicated service. How could they do that to me!!

People, Verizon is a company. And companies exist to make money. If the executives feel they need to offload people, then they do it. At the end of the day, loyalty is one-sided. They do their best to s--- you into loyalty to them and often succeed, but understand that is just a marketing ploy like any other they use to get people to believe in them. We wish it were different, but the employees exist to add value, and when there is a way to add the same or more value without particular people, then you know what the company will do.

I know we as humans like to feel wanted. We have an inner desire to be loyal to someone or something. But always remember that a company is not a person. There is very limited return loyalty. Once we understand that, then we do what we need to do as employees and go on with life. The people who over-sacrifice for the company will eventually realize they paid too high a price. No one ever said they wished they spent more time at the office or in the shop.

I've read a lot of posts about "pay for services rendered" etc. No loyalty etc. In the past, a company wanted you to bond with them. Yeah, old thinking but it looks like it worked better than today's approach. And with that yo became part of a team. That is far more productive than "pay for service rendered" attitude. That loyalty was from the company to you, and from you to the company. That you provided your best in return for job security. A solid team, not transients. If you take the "pay for service rendered" attitude, you have no vested interest in the success of the company. Poor for the employee and poor for the company.

If the management had half a clue on their staffing needs they could plan ahead and hire accordingly, not going through these layoff 'events' a couple times a year. They make the Big $...They should get the boot first for not doing their jobs and planning accordingly. Now, go drink some more VZ Kool-aid.

OP - you are making a thread based on why people believe they were fired. Fired not due to being a lousy worker, but fired for other reasons. Consensus in the other thread was age and salary, which both usually go hand in hand. I don't recall anybody saying that they felt betrayed.

What s---s is the day to day culture that VZ has moving forward. Most I know want to leave this unstable environment, and grab a severance package as we're jumping ship. I was one of the "lucky" ones today. Sorry everyone affected. We have lost some great people the last few years, and my time's coming.

Companies is have not always been like this. Years of service used to mean something.

OP here. I was laid off once, so I know. Things worked out. I have a family member where it didn't work out so well for them when they got laid off. That person told me what I told you to always know the company will not be loyal to you if the money tells them to do differently. So do your job well, do the best you can, go above and beyond here and there because sometimes our jobs require that. But never get s---ed into regularly sacrificing what we hold dear, because you are a number at the end of the day.

So true and that is exactly why there is a Union......The company BuLL$hits you into thinking they care about your future...Not A Chance! They care about theirs ONLY! So you should able to protect and care about yours....YOU enter into a contract with them.....Keep it all on the up and up......I do the work....you pay me and respect me otherwise I don't do the work and no one else will either! TOGETHER we keep the company moving.

We ALL stick together and they can't budge us.....The company is as much mine as it's is theirs for the work WE both do.....Why do you think these Multi-Millionaire CEO's and Leaders fight so hard to keep you from Unionizing. They get rich you get the door...... NO F ing way pal!

OP, I suspect you haven't been laid off yet. We'll see how pragmatic you are when your car is repossessed and the bank forecloses on your home.

That's all true, but I think part of the pain is that it isn't the abstract "Company" that tells us we are RIFd, it's often our manager, someone we may like to some extent, someone with whom we have had some good experiences, and someone who may have told us, very recently, that we are doing a good job. And that idiot jerk in your group is being kept for some reason!
