Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

When Verizon says, "Home For The Holidays"...

They mean for good. Did any women or minorities get RIFed in your group? Because they didn't in mine.

Mostly minority women got RIF'd this round. The White women were RIF'd already. Mostly former Wireless. The Wireline and Indian did not.

The AD hired more VDSI to take our jobs.

@5rth, as an outside observer, it sounds like you're a pretentious PITA, fly-in-the-ointment, type a person who thinks themself just the best, and everyone else a worthless lesser person in status. Just speculation, of course but, if you were the person I just described, and it was my job to decide who I wanted voted off the island, well, just sayin'.

How much FiOS? At the end of 2016, they had 5.7 million FiOS internet connections and 4.7 million FiOS video connections. Looks like FiOS internet increased during 2017 whereas video may have dropped.

So while not huge numbers, it's not trivial either.

"Sell off Fios and the rest of the union driven jobs."

How much Fios do they have left? They got rid of Fios in California, Texas and Florida. Sold it to a Frontier Communications, who promptly lost nearly a third of their Fios customers, mostly because they refused to hire enough employees to take care of business.

Another company who makes money on customer service and then lays off or refuses to hire enough employees to do the job.

"It was performance plain and simple."

No it wasn't. Former XO is being let go left and right. In XO everyone wore more than one hat. We were small (by comparison) and nimble. Yet XO built and maintained a national fiber network that Verizon couldn't match.

Former XO had around 2,500 employees when the deal closed. About 700 now. Maybe around 100 when (or if) the bloodbath ends. To suggest all of these laid off workers were poor performers is ridiculous and insulting. It's a numbers game. We were never integrated (or in my case) not even talked to by anyone in Verizon. I was laid off and they have no clue who I was or what my performance level was. I can still shop myself around at Verizon, for six weeks, but I'm not holding my breath -- chances seem fairly slim that a company that just laid off 10% of their workforce would have have a lot of spare jobs, waiting to be filled.

It's really kind of confusing. Verizon charges premium prices because they used to have superior customer service and better coverage. For now they still have a better network, but their customer service gets worse with every layoff. And their cell phone plans are so expensive (by comparison), that even with a 50% employee discount, there's much better prices. (I use an MVNO that primarily uses Sprint, but has free roaming to Verizon when I'm out of a Sprint area -- $14 month for all I need.)

They remind me of the real AT&T -- they just kept shrinking themselves until they shrank themselves out of existence. Their plan to use AOL and Yahoo as click bait companies to sell ads is a non-starter. I never could understand why any company would think they can take two failing companies, put them together and make one successful company out of them. Marnie Warner is smart and likable and she's running away from AOL/Yahoo as fast as she can run. Facebook, Twitter and Google faked, lied or used bots to inflate their advertising numbers. And Verizon is now trying to jump on the tail-end of a fading fad with companies who couldn't do it before the fad faded.

I'm not saying Verizon is any worse than other companies, in fact when it comes to layoffs their far better than the former XO. When XO decided to lay people off -- there was a guard at their desk, with a box, so you could get your personal items, then he'd walk you to the door. No vacation pay, no benefits, no severance. I'm just saying, if you're laying people off, you're dying. Growing companies hire people. That should be obvious.

@wzj get out of what people want, FIOS, and rely strictly on wireless in an already oversaturated market where T-mobile is winning over millenials, VZW is becoming only grandmas and grandpas cellphone carrier, and VZW may not even exist within 5 years? Youre about as smart as blowell macdaddy...

Like the beer commercial says... BRILLIANT!

First get the union out of Verizon. Sell off Fios and the rest of the union driven jobs. Let someone else deal with their BS. Then work on getting rid of the dead weight and sell it off or unload it. Then forget about the past and get to work making this company great again.

We all know one who wasn’t let go and continues to ravage Verizon. Lowell McAdams.

Instead of putting each other down, we should all work to one goal. Oust McAdams.

Over the years all of the women and minorities were riffed from our group along with some non minorities. It was performance plain and simple. Maybe there are some racists out there but I don't think that is the main driver.
