Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Gift cards

Call me ignorant, but is SHLD still in the gift card business?

Notify anyone you know to not buy this high risk venture. It is only a loan on personal money to Eddie for repayment, which given the circumstances could be detrimental to all involved.

Gift cards aren't really something Eddie likes. He much prefers Shop Your Way. Gift card had a really hard time getting any promotions - they all went to SYW. I think the only reason he let GC hang on is customer preference.

Everyone is different. I wouldn't tie up my money with any of those stores right now. There is no benefit to having a gc such as an extra discount, so why do it?

I am not concerned at all about buying Sears gift cards. It's Christmas time. I don't hold on to gift certificates for a long time anyways, so I really wouldn't be worried about buying Carsons, JCP or Sears gift cards right now.

Sure, and I think I'll try to buy a Woolworth Store gift card, too. Great value -- 40 years ago.

Of course you can still buy the gift cards but why would you??? Too much uncertainty. Why put your money in that position?

No retailer on a path towards likely bankruptcy would preemptively (before actually declaring bankruptcy) stop offering gift cards to anyone still willing to buy them - all retailers love selling gift cards because they both semi-guarantee future sales and let them sit on unused funds.

Yes they are still selling the gift cards at K-Mart. I do agree with @QmTTaa1 that given the current state of the company, I wouldn't recommend buying a gift card from them, but if you do end up receiving a gift card for K-Mart or Sears that you use it QUICKLY (perhaps using it the day after Christmas before it gets "misplaced"!!

Assuming the recipient can find something worth using the GC on at a Sears or KMart. Looking around one, that could be tough.

Depends. Many stores have indeed cancelled their gift cards as part of bankruptcy proceedings. The people who held them would need to file a claim in bankruptcy court, which would cost waaaaaaay more than the value of a $20 gift card.

Quiet Dotard. Buying sears gift cards is perfectly safe, even if they were to go bankrupt.

The cards at toys r us, fine. Even Sears Canada paid out on theirs
