Thread regarding Sears layoffs

SEARS HI commission sales now hourly

Have just been informed Sears HI will now be hourly, just in time for the best sales of the year are coming . Commissions will be gone!!!!!! This is horrible for sears to do to the employees, makes me sick knowing what is happening, the ceiling is only 12.50 we as a company will lose our top sellers. They can still get a set $15 amount with a PA sale.

The exact same thing happened in CE before it was dissolved. I can at least confirm that the things being posted have happened before. You'll get your benefit rate unless it's over the cap, in which case you'll just get 12.50. They will also talk to you separately and tell you not to tell the others until after. I think they even make you sign an agreement.

For a smaller store it will probably cause your store to lose even more money. Our CE department didn't make very much money then suddenly people were getting 11-12 per hour. Even with only 1-2 people staffed it's still a higher expense. it's an interesting decision.

As a customer who's been reading this forum (to try to stay aware of what's going on without having to annoy my local store employees with depressing questions), I haven't been able to find any definitions of what the department acronyms (FJ, HI, HA, any others) stand for. If someone could list their meanings for reference, it'd be helpful. :-)

One of our HA salespeople transferred from a Northeast Sears store to here on the west coast. He said they tested converting commission salespeople to hourly in his previous store. Sure enough, the good, successful, professional salespeople all left and the store was staffed with inexperienced salespeople. According to him, the ones that left are doing very well and successful while his former Sears store is still open but has big turnover and is on the ropes.

So, I haven’t been told that at my store yet though I will be checking. Is this info from one source or are there others on here who have been told the same?

@ctf - You describe exactly what happened at our store. Our store management started treating the established professional HA associates like dirt. One by one they left for better job opportunities and were replaced by "clueless teenagers and job hoppers." It was a miracle if these new hires even lasted 60 days. The turnover became so severe that at times the SM and ASMs had to cover in HA. About two years after this fiasco started our store closed.

this change will take affect on 12/3/17 , all the ASM are to cover this with each employee privately because they will be set at different amounts its not a complete across the board amount the each will be getting other than they will not be over the amount of 12.50

Its true that the commission in HI has become somewhat of a shell game and pretty much a joke. One thing to remember though is that being a commission salesperson looks better on a resume than just being an hourly employee.

While I don't agree with it, I'm surprised commissions for all departments (FJ, HI, HA) haven't been eliminated yet.

If they eliminate commissions in HA, they will be kissing the million dollar sellers goodbye, as well as the long term guys and gals that don't pull in a million due to store size but are just as crucial. Lazy/clueless teenagers and job hoppers will replace the driven and knowledgeable salespeople overnight, literally, and things will really go south.

In my own store, we've lost the last of our HA old timers to some teenagers and college kids earlier this fall. Sales are in the toilet because they'd rather be on their phones or out in their car on a break than helping customers. They have to be cattle herded onto the salesfoor and even then, they only know what they can read on the features and benefits signs. They don't try with upselling, attachments, PAs or credit, they just take orders like they are at a burger counter and nothing more. I could do better and I'm a softlines lead. A few more months and I'm sure our store will be closing.

HI should've gone commission a long time ago. They're already glorified cashiers getting an extra 0.5% - 1.0%.

When did this take effect? Is it in certain markets or company wide?

@QmzaDfW-zpr Yeah I remember when my friend worked at a Circuit City and he LOVED that he got commissions. But soon after they ditch them, guess what happened with them and you can then guess what is going to happen with Sears in the near future.
