Thread regarding Sears layoffs

This is not Eddie's fault

There are still a few assets left that are not spoken for yet regardless of what anyone says. The Kenmore and Diehard name still have value. Their appliance repair business is profitable. I believe these assets will be sold before bankruptcy unless Sears wants to re emerge as just an appliance store and repair company. They cannot compete with a company like Amazon that is over 1000 times larger in market cap and Amazon doesn't have to worry about making a profit on sales. Amazon's cloud business will enable them to crush any competitor in any business, because they have the power and backing to undercut everyone on sales. I guess the mattress and appliance store is not a terrible idea but the cash hemorrhage cannot continue for Sears much longer. I am pulling for them to turn things around. I give Eddie a lot of credit for not sending 200,000 employees home years ago. He has maneuvered and engineered a way to keep the doors open much longer than anyone anticipated and has done a lot to honor the pension obligations.

Reposting from a reply, because I was shocked to see somebody actually give Eddie credit he deserves. Everybody seems to ignore the fact that if there wasn't for him and his money, Sears would be closed already. Kudos @Qf6aoxt-1xsi for pointing this out.

@7ltk It was rumored that our electronics was going bye bye for good, but it didn't the corner looks depressing the electronic guy at times is just standing if not he goes helps tools or at times mattresses. He doesnt sell anything and I seen their overall schedules they get around 70 hours for the little tiny corner its just a big waste of payroll. This is the big problem with the company why keep a dead department alive...

@7acn My Sears, and I think most if not all Sears, got rid of the dedicated electronics associates quite a while ago (maybe a year now?), and the remains of the electronics department were gradually whittled away at until now its former floor space is nothing but appliance overflow, mattress overflow, one little shelf with a few cheap accessories, and a cardboard DVD display.

@7gnd Pretty much to the point when Lampert took control the company wasn't growing it wasn't excelling it was shrinking. A lot of supposed profitable stores ended up closing yet some are still open that are just losing money.

I would like to note electronics use to be one of the hottest departments in our store, but ever since they were done with it and stop investing it was just a small corner with 1 electronics associate with no more than 3 t.v.s and cheap accessories. I mean talk about burning money guy in electronics has it easy and yet they aren't making profit, because their is nothing to sell. A co worker that use to work their for a while said electronics alone would sell around 20 to 30k a day that is what we are suppose to sell in a damn day and we cant do it with the whole store now adays.

Eddie Owns the company, at least the majority of shares for full control, He is CEO and Chairman of the board, the buck definitely stops with him. True without his financing the company would already be bankrupt, basically if you see the conditions of the store it is a bankrupt company....His management ability at retail is horrible lacking. The problems of SHLD are their own doing, not Amazon's. When he took control of the company Sears and Kmart were much larger than today, more viable and more important to consumers. Sears was the #1 seller of appliances. Eddie early into his reign at SHLD stated same store sales don't matter, that was when it was close to a $50B business. Under Eddie's control the company is a shadow of it's former self, the stock value has plummeted while daily the market sets record highs. He wants to save $1B in costs TY, but has lost so many sales dollars this year alone that SG&A % will rise. He never made a serious attempt at a turnaround. This years strategy? A credit card with rewards? Yea no other retailer can compete, really? And investors buy this garbage? He ruined a retail icon, Sears, and didn't even profit from it like a real wall street raider would have.....TRANSFORMATION

@1lqk Pretty much hit it on the spot. He only bought time for people to still have a job if Eddie wanted to change he would of done it before the debt got so bad. Their is profitable and their unprofitable stores. You give bad stores 2 to 4 years (say when Eddie took over) and if he didn't see any money being made you get rid of the dead weight.

Instead its been the other way around reading here that some profitable stores are closing and some unprofitable stores are still opened. This just shows you Eddie doesnt care he is here to make as much money as he can.

He is not the fully responsible of Sears going down, but he has a lot to be blamed for the decisions hes been making. He had time to change the company he actually has the money to invest. To make money you have to spend money. It didn't go that way just been going down hill company shrinking fast and digging a big hole in debt with only losses every quarter.

Eddie saved the company from bankruptcy in the mid 2000s for sure. BUT, it wasn't an act of charity by and means and was probably for his own personal gains.

So while I'd say you should be thankful to him for saving your jobs the reality is you're only benefiting indirectly because what he needs also coincides with keeping the stores open. And I say 'benefit' loosely because having the job period is better than nothing. Even if you hate it you probably need it to support yourself and your family.

The exception to this statement is those of you who are waiting on your pension. The pension program doesn't benefit him so I wouldn't expect much to happen there. Thats a whole different ballgame than just needing the checks that come from your store being open. Good luck though.

Oh my god, you mean there is still money in the budget for trolls? Oh wait, it's probably just Eddie's family around the dinner table, posting to try and justify his arrogance and greed...oh yeah, I am not into their stock, wasn't fired or laid off....retired years back because I recognized the shell game....

@aeg Everyone has his own opinion, but honestly for those of us who have been here since 2005 we wouldn't have even had jobs this long had Eddie not propped us up with cash infusions. I know we all wish things had been different, but they aren't, and we need to do what we can to help support our company and our leader as that leader is paying for our livelihoods.

The buck started with Eddie in 2005 and the buck stops with Eddie now. He has exercised autocratic control over SHLD since 2005, so he is the sole person responsible for shepherding SHLD to its current disastrous state. Eddie's sycophants can sing his praises till the end of time, but that won't change the fact that his self-serving agenda and total lack of retail business acumen resulted in the collapse of SHLD!

There are many of us that agree, but you have to remember you are on a somewhat negative and pessimistic site due to many of the OP's already having been laid off by the company or afraid of a possible layoff.
