Some are long time survivors, i don't know how they do this. talking to people they have good relations with corrupt and insensitive HR. HR keeps the survivor list and they are safe. Any ideas on how to deal with nefarious HR

I was layed off 3 straight times before coming to GE and I've lasted 12 years here. My lessons:

Pay attention to industry trends. Make a move if possible.

Get jobs close to the money, avoid overhead positions.

Know the company politics, try to appear neutral.

Keep friends in low places. Sometimes the facility maintenance folks get heads up on what's happening.

Do a job nobody likes.

Be a go-to person on a particularly product or issue.

If you don't like your current job, get one you do like. Your mgr will notice.

For recent hires, try to hit the ground running. Early successes go a long way.

Avoid conspicuous consumption, or talking about expensive trips or purchases.
The buddy system extends to suppliers as well. I challenged repetitive and significant overspending with a supplier that turned out to be connected tightly with the buddy network. Not long after, my name was quickly added to the layoff list.
1ple, unfortunately it is true. You never see somebody being promoted in GE because he dares to say the truth.
So the GE secret is not to have a backbone and grovel like a puppy dog? I'm sure your wife and kids must be proud of you.
An HR manager actually reports to EB and SPB and they take orders from them. If they say go for a kill they will lay the ground and ambush and cook up a fine story like you never heard. So be careful before you approach HR they are good for nothing. Its your manager who will save you not HR wash her car everyday if you know what I mean. This is the secret GE culture of survivors.
The same managers that racked and stacked their employees are also being racked and stacked. Expect consolidation.
HR takes their orders from managers who are part of the network. The network includes managers, technical leaders, and many hourly personnel.
So why don't management or HR bust this network and get rid of it. If they don't why would anyone want to work there? Can't believe this can happen within a company like GE.
The key to surviving a layoff at GE takes a lot of effort prior to layoff cycles (which are normal and well known at GE). Your “perception” of being an asset is important but secondary to being included in a tight network of “buddies” that have established themselves for many years. This buddy system is particularly prominate in Greenville SC. Everybody knows who they are and it’s not easy to be included in these groups. Not being part of this network greatly increases your risk of being layed off.
Your spineless subservience would make anyone wanna puke. Its not very impressive.
BTW - bring your group down by openly whining, b--ching, and basically being a cancer will get you laid off sooner than being an intellectual threat to your boss. In most groups, the better managers take care of those whose intellect is an asset to his/her or groups performance. HR may or may not recognize this. Right now, if you want to be laid off, simply ask to be. Doing so saves your manager or HR from having to get rid of someone they want to keep.
HR and Manager already has list. If your trying to be smarter then your manager then she or he got you covered in layoff. All i am saying is if you are a threat to manager you are on the top of the list. Survivors are yes boss not how smart they are. HR simply works for EB or SP and they dont give a crap.

Simple. Don't whine, don't b--ch, don't be a cancer. Doing so puts you on a short list real fast.
