Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Mcas and salespeople will replace cashiers

The mcas and salespeople do the cashiering. This is the future of the Sears stores. It's happening on a gradual basis through out the company in various stores. After the first of the year the process will start excelerating. It's part of the transformation vision and downsizing and consolidation of personnel and a move to cut costs. Look at the Sears job openings. You see more and more openings for "cashier and softlines support" and "cashier and hardlines support." After the first of the year you will start to see more opening for "sales support" as a general position which encompasses cashiering and mcas. I was told this by both a district and regional HR manager. This is already happening in our store and a few others in our district. WE aren't happy about it and the commissioned salespeople don't like it because they have missed some sales particularly the mattress salespeople.

The best way to sell its obvious bringing the charisma. Basically sweet talk the customer and you pretty much got a sale. Their is this girl in mattresses that sweet/flirts talks and sells expensive mattresses time to time same happened as cashiers, girls were usually the highest rated on credit card.

Having an attractive person with some charisma and flirting is most likely going to make a sale happened of any sort. It is sad, but it happens usually in any selling position, but you can also have charisma and build confidence to work because in tools we have this guy he isn't attracting, but he sure can talk you into buying something with him.

@2slp Love it. The three women in our jewelry department did the same thing. They were the top jewelry department in our district for sales and credit. Geez! I wonder why?

@QsLdBiy-2nwf Same thing happened to me! I always wear a snug skirt and something low cut this time of year, the men come in to get something for their wives who are running around in their sweatsuit/mom outfits, they bring me lunch and remodel the whole kitchen with new appliances while ogling me, I’m not proud of it but hey, gotta use it while you can, I’m not getting any younger.

I rang up crap from soft lines Friday too, but I still managed to sell $42k in appliances in my 11 hour shift.

One woman was so happy with the deal she got she brought me a sandwich from Panera (and slipped me her # too) it’s like shooting fish in a barrel this time of year.

Love that guy who always makes the home Depot/lowes comment when it comes to ringing out people in HA. The lowes/home Depot appliance sales associates aren't going to ring out purchases from other departments either

Why haven't you commission sales people started a class action lawsuit? Taking you away from sales and negatively affecting your bonus chances with softlines driving down your metrics is unlawful if they profess to pay you commission.

Our salespeople in HA just tell customers that the registers in appliances aren’t set up for scanning regular merchandise.

And then when that person who walked out in disgust because you wouldn't sell them a $10 shirt will remember and buy their next fridge at Home Depot.

Honestly that's the way to go if you want sales. It's really your only option to save yourself. Back when I worked for sears I basically did the same thing. I would tell them they needed to go to a checkout register because my area was meant for appliance sales (we have stand alone registers instead of a checkout booth). Otherwise I found myself losing a ton of money due to ringing up clothes.

I sell in HA but ever since the hours in softlines had been pared back, softlines customers meander over to appliances to check out. So, in a way, Sears management got what they wanted. Stick two cashiers at the CAC and the consultative sales can deal with the rest, tada, money is "saved", with the customer b*tching about having to go hunting for someone to take their money and the long lines at the CAC registers in the process.

It was horrible Black Friday. For 11 hours, all I really did was ring up clothes and cheap junk from over in softlines. Every time I tried to escape to go snag a potential sale in my department, I was met with another cart full of softlines and home goods. I don't get commission on that stuff and it was aggravating to watch my coworkers snag the sales while I tried to be helpful because our company can't or won't pay for sufficient help.

Maybe I'm too nice. There's an older lady that I work with in HA that turns away non-HA customers and she's like the top 5 in our market in sales. Maybe I could take a cue from her.

just let people take the merchandise without paying. It will save staff costs and turn the inventory faster

Sorry to tell you, but this has been going on for a while now and it's not new news

I got news for them - hell no. I did not apply for cashiering. That I work upstairs and we no longer have a register up there, so I hope that will be to my benefit. If forced into it and the crap cashiers have to deal with, then I guess I will be moving on.

They want to save money but let MCAs still be able to get their work done (yeah right, they don't care about us getting work done unless it isn't good enough and then it's our fault) and cut payroll by cutting out cashiers?

Then get frigging self checkout and post people there to oversee it!

I wouldn't be surprised. At the kmart I use to work at, they cut the hours so low to the bone that they couldn't even "afford" cashiers so we had to do the stuff at the front end, along with everything else. that along with the ever increasing workload, there is no way to get stuff done.
