Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

For those thinking acquisitions are reasons for layoffs

Lord have mercy, you guys lack foresight if nothing else. Do you know how much these advertising platforms are worth in revenue? Google made over 7 Billion dollars on it's search, display, and advertising revenue in Q1 2017. Do you know who Google's number one competitor is, now that Verizon bought AOL and Yahoo? Verizon. The fact that you can't see the product is not an indicator of its worth.

I'm not even trying to justify the layoffs. Verizon makes over $4 Billion in profit in a single quarter (PROFIT). They can buy AOL and Yahoo and not even feel it by the end of a fiscal year. The layoffs are a product of automation and technology. Take the retail operations staff, for example. Retail stores had two people on salary doing nothing but checking in inventory and performing operational upkeep- while they had three-to-five managers just for sales, and a ton of reps overpaid and under-utilized. They rolled out the SAP inventory system, shifted the now streamlined responsibilities to the more than capable and available hands of managers and reps, and laid off the operations staff. You can apply this story to every division, and it's going to continue. Spend an evening researching job loss predictions at the hands of technology and automation.

The layoffs aren't because Verizon is hurting. It's because technology is creating redundancy in staff, and no business is going to keep staff that is redundant. That's just silly. Have a look at T-Mobile's structure. Bare bones. They stay out of the light when it comes to this stuff because they never had the excess in staff. They've been running skeleton crew because that's all they could afford, and now technology has caught up to the point that it's all they need.

That is a real joke. Most people use Google and not Yahoo. Most use Yahoo for the free email. Even Firefox dumped yahoo as the preferred search engine and most people use Internet Explorer.

We have been given more work, no overtime and laid off people. The work has not been streamlined or any redundancy removed. We are expected to work harder and if you do some on your own time we won't can you at the next RIF. The work is and has been backing up but we still let go of 3 out of 14 people. Many of the people let go were some of the most talented we got. But hey do we get more efficient? No. We get less because we keep thinking about if it was me and where to start looking for work to provide for my family. Keep drinking the koolaid.

If it keeps up will the last person at Verizon please shut off the lights.

There's no innovation pipeline for the core businesses that make money, and the AOL/Yahoo "strategy" is wishful thinking. Read up on how Verizon gets to pay Mozilla $375M a year for deal to place Yahoo search in Firefox browsers, but Mozilla has switched to google.

"there was a clause in the Mozilla deal that would have the potential Yahoo acquirer pay $375 million per year through 2019 if Mozilla didn’t want to work with the buyer."

Brava Marni, brava. She got out before the sh!t hit the fan on her stupid, stupid moves.

You don't have a clue. People are being forced to work more than 40 hrs and not getting compensated. Capex spending is out of control, and management just goes along to keep their jobs. The buzz is speak up and be the next to get laid off. Very bad work environment.

Verizon's storyline to the street is all about its margin. Financial margin's keep the stock price where its at. Pressure on revenue equates to pressure on margins, and thus pressure on stock price. Every year they do an outlook on future revenues. If the revenue picture looks rosy, then no pressure on margins and employees are safe. However, there IS pressure on future revenues for a number of reasons (Think Marni), and margins are under attack. So, the answer is to reduce expenses to take the pressure off of margins and keep stock price stable. Verizon is not waging a war with its employees. In fact, EVERY IT lead keeps asking for more development staff to keep their projects on track. No leader ever asks for fewer employees year over year. They want and need more to keep the projects running and the lights on. Corporate reduces the budgets each year to keep the margins in place, and so labor is reduced. You can't save $10B by reducing the number of pencils you buy each year. So Headcount takes the hit, despite the need for more heads throughout the organization.

This is indeed a fine comment. Its also scary. And politically, having the foresight to see where the world is going, free governments all over the world, if they really cared for their peoples, (which they dont) would do everything possible NOW to see to it working class folk get to keep 100% or close to it as possible of their paychecks. By 2030 half of society will be jobless, and america will be socialist. Theres no way around it when food, housing, etc. Will be provided by governments to people who now work for it. With no jobs available coming on the horizon, and automation coming to replace most jobs, its the end of work, paychecks, money, etc. etc. NOW is the time to hoard your cash, because when technology replaces workers, there will be only 2 classes. The uber rich and the peasants.
