Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Lots of chatter on the wireless side about unions. Never before have I heard so much union chatter from wireless employees.

Meeting with a union rep here in Portland, not sure what direction we will go but I know more then a few of us are sick of these insane quotas. Even with iPhone launch and Black Friday I'm not even close to hitting quota. Honestly I use to hit it without even trying because of traffic, went through the phase that customers weren't coming in as much and I adapted, worked harder and still exceeded. I'm ok with that. But I'm not ok with busting my a-- to not even come close to quota and get nothing in return, besides talking about HUM. Nobody wants a hum when you can literally just walk to my store or take the bus. Asking everyone starts becoming offensive but my boss doesn't care, she just listens to what everyone tells her to do even when it isn't logical. Time to at least hear out the options

One big problem with a union is that unless every competitor also is unionized, the ones with a union will face a competitive disadvantage. Unless the union brings something to the table that offsets this (higher productivity, better trained, etc.). In my experience in this and other companies, the "better union employee" argument doesn't hold much weight in most union positions. So really the bottom line becomes that union workforce = competitive disadvantage. If you notice, most of our biggest competitors are nonunion. That's not going to be changing anytime soon. So the best thing Vz can do to become competitive again is to reduce the union footprint and try to mitigate the union impact. This is the reality of the current situation.

On the wireless......leadership has convinced people a union would be a terrible way to go. We have regular union awareness meetings. Even though wireless has consistently closed call centers since 2012, wireless employees believe their call center will never be closed. They are hesitant when anyone mentions union. All they while their jobs are being outsourced...they still believe that verizon needs them. Verizon is changing and so is technology. These employees refuse to believe that technology and vendor centers will eliminate their jobs. They will never unionize.

I want to respond to those that say the underperforming will want to join and the over performing will not. I and my over performing compatriots in my district want a union. If you can't see that you will benefit no matter your performance then stfu battery (another matrix reference), I am fighting for everyone because "first they came for them and it didn't matter until they came for us". Do something before they lay us all off! Argue with me I f---ing dare you.

It is dumb to think that you will make less money for joining a union. The whole union thing is much more complicated than that. After this comment you will get a lot of negatives about the union, you got to understand it is like the matrix, if a rep is not part of the supporters they can become an agent. Then you got agents all over the place. And think about this: if Verizon wasn't going to pay you more if you join the union why do they fight it so hard? If unions are dumb to be part of why does the system fight them so hard? The matrix does not want you to know the truth. Follow the rabbit 🐇.

Starting a union at Verizon? Rule #1 don't talk about it with anyone that will tell management. They will bring all kinds of unwanted attention, transfers and corporate types from the east coast. #2 contact CWA asap and ask for help. #3 build a close nit group together in your store and then district to start meeting after/before work. I started but was stomped out by the fear brought by corporate types. The funny thing was, the more attention they gave the more interests my coworkers got in signing up. I'm on the low right now,but I'm going to get back in the game next qtr if they don't lay us off first. Good luck!

I don't foresee wireless ever going union. They aren't enlightened enough to see the benefits. It is much easier to drink the Kool-Aid that has been doled out over the last 25 years and hate upon those who stand up for themselves. It is much more comforting to have an inflated ego and a delusional belief of superiority in ones skillset, work ethic and ability to self advocate. Those in power have always used the less attractive human emotions as tools to manipulate people. The company has skillfully harnessed envy, jealousy, anger and pride etc. to effectively keep wireless non-union.

What could the company possibly do to them to make that circumstance change? Are they going to drink an antidote to the Kool-Aid? Maybe grow a pair? I doubt it. The feckless ones will quit instead of working to unionize. It is easier to just quit. The less scrupulous and sociopathic ones will go into management. The masochists will stick around and get abused somehow believing they are better than those who fight against it. The truly naïve will hate upon those with superior bargained for benefits, working conditions and salary than they themselves earn. They just cant seem to reconcile in their delusional minds how things can be as they are. To them it is just so wrong. After all they are more intelligent, better educated, harder working and more worthy of said benefits than the recipients. To them it is so wrong it is criminal, but again they are naïve. It is not illegal at least not in America. We all have the right to organize and bargain collectively.

They do need to do unions. They are grossly underpaid compared to Wireline counterparts. Which is ridiculous. Wireless is the bread and butter these days and it needs to be reflected in their pay.

I am proud to work for Verizon. Maybe the disgruntled people need to go away instead of waiting with their hands out for a payout.

I can understand why some people who don't have many marketable skills might want a union, but the rest of us aren't so keen on the idea.

if you had marketable skills, you wouldn't be working at this piece of @#t company. Don't be stupid, sign the union or start brushing up on your walmart greeting skills.

Why would I pay protection money to the union for the right to work here? I can understand why some people who don't have many marketable skills might want a union, but the rest of us aren't so keen on the idea. Personally i'd rather make my own future, not pay for someone else's.

@Qtmowic-vqs You're drinking the company cool aide that tells you to watch the 1949 Movie On The Water Front and tells you that there are Union "fat Cats" haha

I wonder why the company doesn't want YOU to Unionize? What are THEY afraid of ?

I know this....The Union is smart enough to enter into a contract with this company. Together we make this company successful, but I will be damned that you will show me the door unjustly and you will treat me with respect and I will get my proper share in this company.

Too many "leaders" and "Big Shots" in this company that earn 7 figure salaries and high 6 figure salaries in top positions are looking out for THIER best interest in this company of OURS....So why cant I.

Get a contract with them.......again why dont they want you to Unionize?

I'd rather avoid the stigma of being union. Plus I don't want to help subsidize some fatcat's standard of living. Rather work on my own terms. When you're really good at what you do, you have more options here or anywhere.

Those old school funny union folks are guaranteed employment at least to 2019 but could leave earlier with a fat check if they so choose!

How about you?

Not just retail....call center employees know that it is only a matter of time before the wireless side closes more call centers.

It won't make any difference. It's a business and if retail is not profitable, then it won't survive union or not.

Same here in Michigan, people are sick of unattainable quotas and being threatened by gm's and dm's for not hitting them. If most of the region isn't hitting quotas are you going to write up and fire 50 to 60 percent of your staff??
