Thinking its time for a UNION DRIVE AT SEARS 1720

I can't stand the store manager he runs this place like we are slaves ... sorry chump we are humans, with a family and lives. We are not your slaves to do with as you wish, working us 6 days a week 10-12 hours a day, then sit in your office and do your emails all day and conference calls ... So you say ?????CAN YOU SAY UNION DRIVE AT SEARS

What is going on at 1720? This is not the first time complaints have come from that store and GM! Is it that bad?

They did try to unionize quite a few years back at 1720, the HA dept started it. Nothing ever came of it but the crew being let go for other reasons than trying to start a union

We have a morale killing, nonproductive store manager in the Northwest region with no people skills, approachability or leadership qualities at all. The only thing she has going for her is that she's been with the company 30 years.

Tenure means nothing, especially when employees are treated with blatant contempt and disregard, while key results are not being delivered despite threats and intimidation. A big red flag is the massive revolving door at this particular store. We have the highest turnover in the market. There is a reason why.

With tenure, one should be fully developed professionally, which is not the case here. There are store managers with a whole lot less experience that can drive results and keep their team motivated in a positive, constructive way, which is impressive considering the company isn't doing well.

That said, I personally wouldn't want to unionize, despite working in a toxic work setting because of our store manager. I don't think a union would solve anything. All you do is try to find a better employer that has a winning company culture with effective leadership. They are out there, and I'm looking, believe me.

@ufw I am glad their is people like you that stand up for yourself. I hate when managers think they can push you around because they are the managers yet you shut the up and they stay quite. At this point no managers have the ball in the court when you are a veteran and know how to do your job. Any veterans that know how to run their department should be taken well care off because at this point of time with the hours cuts their is no way you can get one to be well trained and efficient as you were.

@mzn In my store the operations is the most efficient ASM of all you always see her fixing devices, helping other departments with questions, ringing up customers basically handling her duties along with probably 80 percent of the SM work load. The most useless worker and easiest money making person is obviously our SM. I never see him ringing a customer. See him complaining and asking for numbers calling you to give him updates. Its like really he makes the most and does the least. This is the reason the company is going under. To add if we do survive one last year (somehow Sears tries to go for one last round because at this point they are pretty much so dried up). I am seeing our operations going bye bye when she is gone man are things going to get super bad in my store I mean she does all that she gone nothing will get done....

@Qu3cDr3-ups that was a newspaper strike and they already were union. The company forced the union to strike, the companies won Pyrrhic victories and are now shadows of their former selves. Everybody lost.

Okay you don't really go "on strike" if you aren't part of a union because then you are paid absolutely nothing. If you refuse to work, then obviously you probably won't have a job anymore. I know if I refuse to work, I no longer have a job. Maybe that is what you want, but a "strike" is kind of funny in thought as we aren't unionized.

Our HA ASM schedules us 43 to 45 hours and that is still to many people on the floor with no sales. We worked 53 the week of Black Friday. Look into it anything over 53 for commission sales associates must be paid premium hourly rate. Talk to you HR rep it is in writing.

I guess in other Sears store salaried management are worked to death. Not in my store. Best job is SM -- no work at all & definitely Sundays off. Lots of conference calls & reviewing metrics while sitting at a desk. Next best job is Operations Manager. Zero work, infrequent presence at the store & a decent salary of 65K. Less $$$ than the SM but no need to have worked yourself up through the ranks. The 2 ASMs used to work because they were new to the store. Now not so much because of the other 2. Why would you? The ASMs should take their talents elsewhere.

55 hours in HA during the holidays is pretty standard. In our Sears store it backfired on management. Two of the HA salespeople refused to work 55 hours. They said they would work 40 to 45 hours only. Management threatened to terminate them in a very public display at the morning meeting. Their response was "go ahead, who is going to replace us?" They had management over a barrel and speechless. We are so grossly understaffed and no one wants to work at Sears. We actually opened this past Sunday with only 1 HA salesperson for an hour and closed with 2. The two HA salespeople who refused are only working 40 hours this week. Score one for the little guy.

HA are being scheduled 55 hours weather they like it or not, if we refuse then we are threatened to be let go

If you are salary yes they can work you as many hours a week as they want to because you are exempt from overtime and a manager. As numerous DMs and a Regional Manager have told me, once you become a manager at Sears, Sears is your life. Why do you think so many ASMs and SM's leave the company and go elsewhere? If you are hourly they cannot force you to work overtime. When they want me to work overtime in my Sears store I can accommodate them 90 to 95 percent of the time. If not I just say NO. They know that since I can accommodate them the vast majority of the time that my NO is legitiment. So just say NO sometimes. On the other hand if you are afraid you'll lose your job you'll unfortunately just have to put up with it. Hang in there.

I fully sympathize with what you are doing and saying, but trust me, if you go on strike it will not go well at all. This company is on its death bed and I'm pretty sure you won't get any sort of demands met. The only thing positive it will do is give Sears bad press which hey, I'd say go for in that case.
