Thread regarding Sears layoffs

How low can Sears go with the hours?

Seriously, how low do they think they can go with hours and still have a functioning store? We were down to skeletal crew as it is, and we just got a directive to cut even more hours.

Does this mean our store is about to be closed? I see no other explanation, but we haven't heard anything, not even rumors.

Is this what happens before closing?

January 2018 will be bleak. 6 hours a week. Maybe 9. In my store anyway. I can see it coming.

@1rpj You know what ticks me off in my department is how hours get cut so bad when we aren't doing that bad. I always hate how the ASM would say you want more hours sell more. My department has been able to hold its ground we are doing better than other departments yet we get a cut and are expected to do miracles with the limited hours. We are one of the few departments that is close to making goal or not so negative as other departments. We been losing tons of hours ever since our lead got eliminated she was basically their to protect us after that the ASM took over control and she just favors her department despite we been beating them in sales. Also to add I have heard around that she cuts our hours to give them to her other department.

It is definitely time to be searching at this time its really hard to say if we are done or we are going for one last round here. Honestly if we do end up surviving another one you will for sure see how bad the situation is going to get I mean right now its very bad never seen hour cuts so bad staffing very limited. Back in the days in my department it was never alone even on a slow day one person was their. Now we get their like 2 or 3 hours after store open hell one time I just went to close for a short shift a few times actually. They are going to cut it through the bone if we go for another round. Its time to just be on the lookout unless others have plans. Lots of position will surely get eliminated hours getting even more cut as well its going to be so bad that it will become unbearable.

I'm an ex-manager with the company and have been observing this circus for years. There is very little rational process behind the hours cuts. They just know sales are poor and drastically try to cut expenses to match. It doesn't matter if the stores can barely function and the hours cuts cause more losses of sales. They will cut until the stores are put out of business.

This really could be the final Christmas season for these pathetic stores. It's been said many times on this board, but employees do need to be getting ready to get other jobs.

@xwc They should do the changes, but doesn't change much with my SM he hides and usually has the ASM do his work. I seen it a lot and operations just complains at times that she has her work load along with the SM I know they have their duties, but with my SM he is just lazy and doesnt want to even do his own work load.

@vix The managers are forced to spend most of their time generating useless micromanagement reports via phone and paper. (That's what they're doing most of the time that it seems like they're hiding in their office instead of helping run the store - some of them may just be lazy jerks regardless, but they are required to hide in their office to do all that pointless junk if they want to keep their jobs.) SHC would have to make a drastic (long overdue) change in their management priorities to cut out a lot of that reporting if they wanted to be able to cut the managers' hours.

The hour cuts are horrible here I come like 2 hours after store is opened when we are in the holiday season. I mean what a damn joke seriously. I would assume the point is to invest well staffed departments to try to take up as much sales as possible before January kicks in.

I would assume that the smartest most efficient thing to do is to maybe cut the ones that arent helping aka maybe ASM or SM. I mean if they cut their $$$ and give it to associates (especially veterans that work well) things would be off much better in our store.

I wouldn't think too much about closing yet... While having the store's hours reduced is a bad sign, there are other factors that go into the closing process. You won't know until you hear about it at the member rally. It's going to happen eventually, so don't waste time thinking about during the Christmas season.

DO start putting together/updating your resume, and start looking on Indeed.com for jobs.

Yes, that's probably a bad sign. The stores that are still doing better on earnings tend to still get more hours. Yours might be in the next round of closure announcements (more locations will probably be announced shortly after Christmas, and spend the following 3 months liquidating).
