Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Chevrom Bakersfield Layoffs

(Source below) --

Roughly 100 Chevron employees working for the San Joaquin Valley Business Unit received layoff notices Thursday, but won’t be let go until after the holidays, the company announced.

Those layoffs — which will impact about 300 employees — were first announced in October in reaction to depressed crude oil prices that dropped by half in 2014 and have still not recovered.

The decision was made after a months-long review of the company’s West Coast operations.

The remaining 200 employees will be phased out between now and the end of 2018, Chevron spokeswoman Abby Auffant said in an email.

“Eligible employees may receive severance pay, educational assistance and career transition services,” Auffant wrote.

She added that Chevron has “recently” placed about 100 employees in positions at other company locations, however it’s unclear whether Chevron planned to lay-off those employees.

When the workforce reduction was first announced, Chevron officials said they were encouraging employees to apply for opportunities throughout Chevron.

Employees in San Joaquin Valley Business Unit take part in “upstream” energy exploration and production. The regional division includes employees of all disciplines, ranging from engineers to business support staff.

That division posted losses totaling more than $6 billion for two straight years after crude oil prices plummeted in 2014, according to the company’s annual report filed in February.

There’s a silver lining to every dire situation, fbrc. It’s always a matter of perspective and how you are able to focus on the positive. Believe this temporary opportunity is a stepping stone to a permanent position within the company and your attitude change will pay off. You don’t lose anything in updating your resume and strengthening your networks. The main thing is to show up on time and do the best job you can. Show your interest each day in wanting to continue your contributions to the company.

My most sincere wishes to you @cddu. This temporary job treatment won’t be offered to many, so it speaks positively of how you are perceived. Your current job may have been eliminated, but the powers at hand have thrown you a life line. Work hard to show your appreciation. Merry Christmas.

I suspect learning to spell Chevron would help you retain your job.

Chevron and their management are nothing but a bunch of Bastards. Anyone who is laid off needs to spread the word to college graduates to stay the hell away. Also, if you are hired in Houston and you are not a Texas A&M or Rice graduate, you will be the first on the chopping blocks to go...Take a look at that big Chevron sign at Texas A&M's new stadium and Steve Green handing massive checks during halftime..sickening

Make sure you say Season's Greetings or Happy Holidays (not Merry Christmas) as you pack and are escorted from the building.

To the guy who blames management for laying off newer O&M, you must have no clue. The good ol union screwed everyone once again! It is written in the contract they have to lay off lowest seniority first, no one to blame but the useless union.

You have a keen observation, 1obx. But all this is no accident. It’s done this way by design.

Most who were given pink slips were from O&M, petrotechs will be dealt later. Height of poor management was those leaving were selected based on seniority with most juniors leaving and most senior staying. Issue with this is we hired these juniors in past 3-7 years to help replace the olderones as their retirement time comes. Now those who stayed will be reitiring in 2-3 years anyway - great planning Chevron.

My heartfelt sympathy Also. Pay no attention to the butthurt losers posting here. The fact is during any layoff a large part of it is the luck of musical chairs and not individual ability or contribution. I wish you all the best. There are other options, even if not obvious at the moment. It worked out for me, after a year of pain, and I was more butthurt than most ... soldier on and it will work out for you!

My heartfelt sympathy to those who were handed their layoff announcement today. I know how disappointing it feels to be punched in the gut when you didn’t deserve it and you weren’t yet ready to call it quits.
