Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Skills and talent

Dell seems to have the impression that their most important talents and "skills" are the "people managers" only. It is a generally understandable with the execs oversimplified thinking that their people managers are the ones actively manage their best skilled individual contributors and make decision for their best people. When the fact is, people managers are actually busy navigating away from the metrics and keeping the most loud mouthed people and the most likely to give a good tell dell scores to them even if these people are the poorest performers, and one of the main reason is also because the managers have no ability to identify skills that are too modern and alien to them. For those that says we are too metric oriented, all those metrics are just there for show, like a poor tell dell score, they do nothing. Just there for the sake of looking fair. At the end of the day, being related, relationship and ability to talk your way out, plucking starfish from midair, making comments that belittle another'a work are what matters. Going AI and cloud, a language so foreign, so alien to our current management and the brain drain. A big mistake is being made. Why do we go big data if data is the last thing we care about?

old timers here are f---ing dependent. cannot do even then simplest thing themselves, cannot learn to solve their own most ridiculous problem like I can't open my file, just old dogs who cannot learn new tricks, they just ask and wait for answers like every new hire is their personal IT assistant.

Well, that is true for all companies with Walmart mentality for which high quality code, innovation and invention is a waste of time compared to cost cutting and cheapening the assembly process. This results in really crappy software which very few people/companies take seriously. As a result most of those companies in the computer industry are really cheap hardware assemblers and outsourcers.
