Does sears actually make any profit? Everyone keeps saying they are in debt but surely they are not staying open to loose money! I

In a word NO and they have not for a long time at last count SHLD spends $1.19 to sell $1.00 worth of goods .

It's lose not loose.
But yes sometimes staying open and losing money is less expensive than the cost to close.
Expenses are 30X earnings. Now way to cut cost to get out of that. Add to that, that as you close stores your revenue goes down and Sears/Kmart are bleeding customers.
Making money and Sears do not belong in the same sentence.
Knowing this company, they would brag about it if they were turning a profit.
They have lost in the neighborhood of 7 Billion dollars over the last 5 years. I worked in a B store that did 18 Million in 2007. when I was separated in 2016 it did 4 Million. That's the real turn around.
